Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Sept. 17 at the home of Susan Brown. President Cindy Meitler led the meeting with 12 members present.
Great Bend City Slickers 4-H club met on Sept. 12 at the Presbyterian Church. Nine members, three leaders and eight parents were present. It was announced that 4-H record books are due on Sept. 18. Election of officers will take place at the next meeting. 4-H week is Oct. 6- Oct. 12 and all members were asked to wear their 4-H t-shirts and bring friends to the next meeting. Pilot International Foundation was established in 1975 to support the community-based work of Pilot Clubs by promoting the awareness and prevention of brain-related disorders, and improving the lives of those affected by such disorders, through education, volunteerism, financial support, and research. Each year, the Great Bend Pilot Club supports the efforts of Pilot International through a multitude of activities.

Fifteen members of the Great Bend Garden Club enjoyed Pat Halbower's delightfully humorous personal account of the evolution of the forest of various trees, the ever changing flower beds and lawn, and the feeding of creatures, both winged and four legged, both wanted and unwanted, that have been the experience of the Halbowers over the past 40-plus years as they have worked in and enjoyed the outdoor spaces of their home. Arrangements for the program at the September Garden Club meeting were made by Delores Grose.
The Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel will meet at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 13, at Montana Mike's, 906 McKinley in Great Bend. President Sally O'Connor will chair the meeting. Dues of $20 ($15 state, $5 local) for 2014 will be due and payable at this meeting.

Parnassus Club held their annual piano and voice auditions on March 1 at the Barton Community College Fine Arts Building. Twenty-three piano and voice students participated in the auditions open to all Barton County music students. The voice students perform two art songs memorized and piano students perform one memorized solo for an adjudicator who then writes an evaluation of the student's performance and gives awards in both the Junior category,(6th grade through 8th grade) and senior division (high school). The adjudicator for both voice and piano was Ms. Tiffiney Harms, McPherson College music instructor.

On March 1, the parents of Barton County 4H Air Rifle kids braved the winter weather conditions and traveled to Hays so the 4H'ers could compete in the Ellis County 4H Air Rifle Match.

The Progress Club met on March 3, at the home of Karen Becker with Janet Engelman and Pat Halbower as co-hostesses. Fourteen members attended. Judy Fox presided in the absence of Norma Ward and opened the meeting with the Lord's prayer. Roll call was followed by the reading and approval of the previous month's minutes. Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi honored its president Cindy Meitler as Valentine Queen during a special dinner attended by members and their guests on Feb. 8 at Great Bend Coffee Company.
On Feb. 13 the TLC Twisters 4-H Club delivered bird feeders they made to Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation residents. They were made from combining gelatin and bird seed and forming them in cookie cutters in the shape of hearts for Valentines Day.
4-H'ers from across the state traveled to Great Bend on Feb. 15, to compete in the Barton County Winter Classic Air Rifle Match.
