Garden Club tours members gardens

The Great Bend Garden Club held a tour of gardens for its May meeting. The tour began on the backyard patio of Bonnie Sarff where light refreshments were served by Bonnie, Teresa Bachand, and Fern Tompkins. Then nineteen members and two guests, Darlene McDorman and Linda Ludes, visited and enjoyed the spring flower gardens of Bonnie, Mary Kummer, Alice Young, Delores Baker, and Delores Grose.

Great Bend Junior Rotarians

Great Bend Rotary recognized this year's Junior Rotarians at a luncheon on Monday. Two students are selected each month during the school year from Great Bend High School Seniors. These students are given the opportunity to attend weekly meetings with Rotary to learn about the organization as well as the community through a variety of special presenters. Rotary also presented Louis Burley with a $500 Junior Rotarian scholarship.

Silver Circle Honor

Janis Link, member of Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, was honored by her chapter with the Silver Circle Ceremony in April, recognizing her for 25 years of membership in Beta Sigma Phi. She will serve as president of her chapter for 2011-12.

Preceptor Pi learns about equipment in Barton’s Cohen Center

Progress Club

Progress Club members made a field trip to Greensburg on May 2 to view firsthand the town's recovery since the 2007 tornado. GreenTown tour leader Ruth Ann Wedel led the group on visits to the Silo Eco-Home, 5.4.7 Arts Center, Kiowa County Schools complex, Kiowa County Memorial Hospital, Methodist Church, BTI Greensburg - John Deere, and a private home. She explained the sustainable eco-friendly construction methods used. Members enjoyed lunch at the Green Bean.

Kummer presides over ESA convention

The 66th-annual Kansas State Convention of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International was held April 28-May 1 at the Highland Hotel and Convention Center in Great Bend. Kim Kummer, member of ESA: chapter Delta Tau of Great Bend, served as the Kansas state president of Epsilon Sigma Alpha for the 2010/2011 year. Great Bend Saddle Club Third Annual Benefit Ride

On April 16th, the Great Bend Saddle Club held their Third Annual Benefit Trail Ride. This trail ride benefited the Pawnee County Humane Society. To ride the riders brought bags of pet food that was given to the humane society along with proceeds from the poker hands. Participants were able to purchase tickets to play poker hands on electronic games. The top three poker hands won cash prizes.
