The Lions Clubs of Western Kansas District 17-K will hold their annual District Convention on Saturday, March 7, at Memorial Union on the Fort Hays State University Campus. International guests will be Yves and Dominique Leveille of Ormestown, Quebec, Canada.
Barton County 4-H shooting sports leaders hosted the 11th annual Barton County 4-H Winter Classic on Saturday, February 21, at the Expo Complex. In the air rifle division, the scores at the end of the day were Sedgwick County – 2004 and Barton County – 2004. The tie was broken on the number of bulls shot by the four team members. Sedgwick County had 38 and Barton County had 34. The team members for Barton County were Parker Smith, Ryan Kohman, Katelyn Reh, and Lake Lyman. It was a very competitive match and all participants were congratulated on their hard work.
At the February Great Bend Garden Club meeting, member Alice Young introduced Rebecca Ford who gave a fascinating introduction to the art of soap making. Her inspiration and mentor was a sister at a convent in Wichita whose homemade soaps provided funds for a church mission project.
The regular monthly meeting of the Great Bend City Slickers 4-H Club was held on Dec. 18th. The meeting was called to order by President Caleb Maneth. There were 11 members, three leaders, 11 parents, and three visitors. The members discussed the 4-H council and livestock and new rules. Hailey Hicks had a Project Talk, Kyle Rhiza did a demonstration, and Josh Crawford had a Health and Safety talk. Club members held a white elephant exchange.
The Kansas Chapter of Singles in Agriculture will host the 2015 National Convention in conjunction with the Mid-American Ag. Expo on March 26 to 28 in Salina. Headquarters will be at the Ambassador Hotel and convention Center in Salina. Singles in Agriculture will have a booth at the Ag Expo on March 26th.
Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi presented monetary donations in January to the Makinna Ann Hope Foundation, established to help families with special-needs children, and Kans for Kids, which provides funding to help families with children living with cancer. In addition, members gave donations of food to the Barton County Food Bank.
The Great Bend Area Panhellenic is a local organization for alumni of the Greek sororities belonging to the National Panhellenic Conference. One objective of the group is to promote interfraternity, friendship and collaboration among Greek alumni. On Feb. 7, members of the American Legion Auxiliary throughout the state of Kansas met in Winfield at Post #10 located at 115 W 10th Avenue for the annual Mid-Winter Conference. There was a joint session with members of the American Legion beginning. Following the joint session, the Auxiliary proceeded to the First United Methodist Church located at 1000 Millington Street. Special guests from the Auxiliary's National organization werein attendance. They included Diane Duscheck, National Children and Youth Chairman and Martha Lee Thatcher, National Chairman for Girls Nation.
