Great Bend Saddle Club will have a play day on Saturday, Aug. 27, at the arena west of Great Bend. Activities will start around 5:30 p.m.
Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) International held their annual International Convention July 18-23, at the Sheraton Hotel and Convention Center Overland Park. Lisa and Bob Baum, Coleen and Ira Cape, and Kim and Steve Kummer attended from Great Bend. Cape served as the convention chair of the 64th Annual Convention, Sunflower Serenade for the 500 attendees. IC President Dora Dill, Nebraska presided over the convention. She challenged ESA members to "Celebrate the Child" during the 2010-2011 year.

League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold the monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday, at The Club at Stone Ridge. Lunch will be from the menu. The program will be provided by Marissa Woodmansee from Juvenile Services. She will be giving us an overall view of Juvenile Services and how it coordinates with the other agencies in the area that handle juvenile problems. She has been with the Services for thirteen years. They cover a large district, and offer many services to the youth of the area.
The Quivira Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association will host The Pawnee Tribe in Kansas, a presentation and discussion by Chris Howell at 2 p.m. on Aug. 6, at the Barton County Historical Society, 85 S. Highway 281, in Great Bend. Members of the community are invited to attend the free program. The program is made possible by the Kansas Humanities Council.
On July 2, Boy Scouts of America Troop 149 held a celebration for being chartered with the Boy Scouts for 25 years and to recognize its two newest Eagle Scouts. It was also to induct new Scoutmaster Dr. Chris Koster, as the past Scoutmaster Ken Edgett stepped down after serving in that role for the last 20 years. Trinity United Methodist Church in Great Bend has been the sponsoring organization of the troop since it started in 1986.

Members of Preceptor Pi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi present a gift of $453 to Dr. Kyle Krebaum for the Makinna Ann Hope Foundation established by Krebaum and his wife, Tasha, in memory of their daughter, Makinna, with the goal of providing special-needs toys and equipment to local families who have special-needs children. Since the chapter's first donation to the Makinna Ann Hope Foundation in 2008, Preceptor Pi has contributed a total of $2,532 to the foundation, which works closely with the local Sunflower Early Education Center to respond to the special needs of the children who attend ...
Each year, the Great Bend Pilot Club supports the efforts of Pilot International through a multitude of activities. The original Foundation - Pilot International Foundation was established in 1975 to support the community-based work of Pilot Clubs by promoting the awareness and prevention of brain-related disorders, and improving the lives of those affected by such disorders, through education, volunteerism, financial support, and research.
Stan Jantz of Hoisington was honored Saturday by being presented with the to his chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. Stan is the Americanism Chairman for the Sons of the Plains Chapter which meets in Hutchinson. Stan is a member of the Color guard and has participated in events at every opportunity and initiated opportunities when none were scheduled. Stan has been instrumental in getting joint involvement with the DAR Chapter in Ellsworth.
During their September meeting, 16 members of the Great Bend Garden Club travelled to the Kansas Wetlands Education Center to hear about the progress of the center's butterfly garden.
