Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 and its Ladies Auxiliary met on March 27 at the Post Home.
League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold the monthly meeting on Tuesday at at Montana Mike's in the north room. Lunch will be from the menu and can be their "quick serve" menu.
Barton County 4-H was host to Regional 4-H Day at Great Bend High School on March 9th. Regional 4-H Day participants are the top presentations selected at their local county 4-H Day. The counties that are in our region are Ellsworth, Pawnee, Rice, Russell, Stafford and of course, Barton.
Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at March 20 at the home of Janis Link, who also served as co-hostess. President Janis Link conducted the meeting.
The 17th Annual Kansas Iwo Jima Reunion and Dinner was founded by the late Walt Vincent in 1996. This is the inaugural year to include other World War II veterans. The event will be on May 5 at the Arden H. McKee American Legion Post #128, 108 East Garfield in Sterling, The door will open at 2:30 p.m. for refreshments and viewing of memorabilia. All veterans are invited and encouraged to bring personal memorabilia.
The Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel met at the Club at Stone Ridge at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 9. President Rose Kelly called the meeting to order and led the flag salute. Becky Dudrey gave the invocation. Forty-eight members and two guests, Joyce Weeden and Doneida Baker, were present. Rose introduced visitors Judy Jones, District IV KARSP Director; and her husband, Max Jones.

Due to state budget cuts to the Kansas VFW Veterans Services, the military order of the Cootie, Local Cheyenne Flyway Pup Tent 7 of Kansas will hold a consignment auction at 9 a.m. on April 7 at the VFW Post 3111, 504 Washington with 3% of the proceeds donated to the Cooties to help veterans in need.
The Claflin Lions Club Annual Seafood Buffet will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on March 16 at the Catholic Church Parish Hall. Zeta Gamma Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha met for a special dinner at the Elks Lodge in Great Bend on Feb. 25 to honor the chapter's Outstanding Sister for the year, Jeanette Shirer. She was presented with a gift and an Outstanding Sister charm. Jeanette fIrst joined Alpha Tau Chapter in Hoisington in 1952. She went inactive for a period of time to raise her children and to help her husband with his work. At the February Great Bend Garden Club meeting, member Alice Young introduced Rebecca Ford who gave a fascinating introduction to the art of soap making. Her inspiration and mentor was a sister at a convent in Wichita whose homemade soaps provided funds for a church mission project.
The regular monthly meeting of the Great Bend City Slickers 4-H Club was held on Dec. 18th. The meeting was called to order by President Caleb Maneth. There were 11 members, three leaders, 11 parents, and three visitors. The members discussed the 4-H council and livestock and new rules. Hailey Hicks had a Project Talk, Kyle Rhiza did a demonstration, and Josh Crawford had a Health and Safety talk. Club members held a white elephant exchange.
The Kansas Chapter of Singles in Agriculture will host the 2015 National Convention in conjunction with the Mid-American Ag. Expo on March 26 to 28 in Salina. Headquarters will be at the Ambassador Hotel and convention Center in Salina. Singles in Agriculture will have a booth at the Ag Expo on March 26th.
Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi presented monetary donations in January to the Makinna Ann Hope Foundation, established to help families with special-needs children, and Kans for Kids, which provides funding to help families with children living with cancer. In addition, members gave donations of food to the Barton County Food Bank.
The Great Bend Area Panhellenic is a local organization for alumni of the Greek sororities belonging to the National Panhellenic Conference. One objective of the group is to promote interfraternity, friendship and collaboration among Greek alumni.
