Barton County 4-H travels to Ellis County Air Rifle Match

On Saturday 10 4H'ers from Barton County traveled to Hays to compete in the Ellis County 4H Air Rifle Match. Not only was the weather very good but so were their results.

Ladies Auxiliary VFW

The Ladies Auxiliary VFW is one of the nation's oldest veterans' service organizations and members are the relatives of those who have served in overseas combat. There are 475,000 members representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign-based Auxiliaries who volunteer millions of hours and give millions of dollars to support veterans, military personnel, and their families.

League of Women Voters meeting

League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold the monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday at Montana Mike's in the north room. Lunch will be from the menu and can be from their "quick serve" menu.

Barton County 4-H hosts Winter Classic

Barton County 4-H shooting sports leaders hosted the 11th annual Barton County 4-H Winter Classic on Feb. 21, at the Expo Complex. In the air rifle division, the scores at the end of the day were Sedgwick County – 2004 and Barton County – 2004. The tie was broken on the number of bulls shot by the four team members. Sedgwick County had 38 and Barton County had 34. The team members for Barton County were Parker Smith, Ryan Kohman, Katelyn Reh, and Lake Lyman. It was a very competitive match and all participants were congratulated on their hard work.

On Feb. 28, three Barton county 4h'ers battled the winter weather to travel to Cimarron to compete in the Gray County 4-H air rifle match.

Progress Club meeting

Progress Club met March 2 at the home of Linda Dougherty with Norma Ward and Judy Turner as co-hostesses. The meeting was opened with a prayer. Correspondence read was a thank you from Diana Webster, presenter of the the Feb. program. Cards were signed for Mary Ann Mull and Janet Little. Judy announced the nominating committee of Sharon Jones, Kathy Schugart, and Judy Turner who will present a ballot of proposed officers at April meeting.

Fundraiser for Claflin Lions Club

Claflin Lions Club members will be selling tickets for their Annual Seafood Buffet now through March 20. The menu for the evening will include all you can eat servings of fish, shrimp, clam chowder, scalloped potatoes, vegetables, bread, coffee or tea.

Lions Club annual District Convention

The Lions Clubs of Western Kansas District 17-K will hold their annual District Convention on Saturday, March 7, at Memorial Union on the Fort Hays State University Campus. International guests will be Yves and Dominique Leveille of Ormestown, Quebec, Canada.

Garden Club enjoys lesson on soap making

At the February Great Bend Garden Club meeting, member Alice Young introduced Rebecca Ford who gave a fascinating introduction to the art of soap making. Her inspiration and mentor was a sister at a convent in Wichita whose homemade soaps provided funds for a church mission project.
