Sam Phillips and Bradley Hanks were recently awarded the prestigious Eagle Scout award at a Boy Scout Troop 184 Eagle Court of Honor. The Eagle Scout award is the highest youth honor in Scouting.
The Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel met at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 9 at the Club at Stone Ridge. President Rose Kelly called the meeting to order. A total of 49 members were present. Rose led the flag salute and Becky Dudrey gave the invocation. The minutes of the Sept. 2 meeting were approved as printed and the treasurer's report was approved as read.
The Parnassus Club met on Dec. 13. Parnassus Auditions have been set for March 3rd, 2012. The room is approved for the auditions. Glenna and committee are searching for judges at this time.
Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Dec. 13 at the home of Rosie Luthi for the annual Christmas social and meeting attended by 13 members. President Janis Link conducted the meeting.
Nine veterans, honored at a ceremony of the American Legion Post 180 on Nov. 18, were presented a medallion and certificate from the Kansas Veterans Administration and Governor Sam Brownback for their military service in the Vietnam War era.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 and its Ladies Auxiliary met on Nov. 22 at the Post Home.
League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold the monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday at The Club at Stone Ridge. Lunch will be from the menu. The program will be provided by State Senator Ruth Teichmann. She will be discussing the redistricting project, and the important issues facing the legislature for the new term. The luncheon is informal and time will be allowed for discussion from the floor. The public is invited to attend and participate in the discussion.
Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi enjoyed the program "Candies for the Holidays" presented by Cindy Meitler when the chapter met Nov. 15 at her home.
The Progress Club met on Dec. 5 at the home of Patricia Halbower with Becky Dudrey as co-hostess. There were 15 members present.
Disabled American Veterans Chapter 27, Great Bend will be holding their annaul Christmas Dinner, instead of their monthly meeting, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 2 at the Great Bend American Legion Post 180, 1011 Kansas Ave., northeast conferance room.
Charles Waknitz was elected president of the local Golden Belt Chapter of NARFE at the November meeting.
Preceptor Pi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi collected and delivered a variety of foods to the Barton County Food Bank in February and March. This month, the chapter will give a $110 donation to Prairie Godmothers.
On April 11, ten Barton County 4-H'ers traveled to Alma to compete in the 2015 State 4H Air Rifle Match.
The April meeting of Parnassus Club met at the home of Darlene Boley. President Coralie Button presided over the business meeting. The club will continue the study of the Tone Poem for the 2015-2016 year. Club members heard presentations by four of the audition winners.
Progress Club met on April 6, at home Karen Becker with Janet Engleman and Pat Klusener as co-hostesses. Seventeen members attended. The program was given by Jan Peters, CEO of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce. Jan grew up in Colby and graduated from Great Bend High School. She spoke about economic development in Great Bend and efforts which have resulted in new businesses here: Central National Bank, Plains State Bank, Almost Home, Seaport Airlines and others. She also noted the efforts of many past and present Great Bend residents who have made a positive difference in our economic community.
League of Women Voters of Great Bend has changed the meeting day and the site for the month of April. This is to accommodate the speaker, who cannot meet with League on a Tuesday. The meeting has been changed to noon on April 6, at the Classic Inn.
