Each year chapters of Epsilon Sigma Alpha honor members who go above and beyond in their efforts to provide support to those in need. Noon Lions give to Japan effort

The Great Bend Noon Lions Club recently donated $1,000 to earthquake/tsunami relief in Japan through the Lions Club International Foundation. The funds are part of more than $6 million LCIF has committed to the effort, including $3 million contributed by Lions in Japan.

Eagle Scout Tyler Koelsch

The Eagle Scout Court of Honor was bestowed upon Tyler John Koelsch on March 12 at the Eastridge Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Neb. Tyler is the son of Rick Koelsch, formerly of Great Bend and the late Jane Koelsch. Grandparents are LeRoy and Jean Dringmann and June Koelsch, all of Great Bend. Tyler is a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop #2 Cornhusker Council. His scoutmaster is Scott Connors.

Barton County Historical Society to host Volunteer Orientation - April 7

The Barton County Historical Museum and Village will conduct an Orientation Meeting at 1 p.m. on April 7 at the Village south of the river bridge on Highway 281. The meeting is for anyone in Barton County who seeks information about volunteer service at the museum. This meeting will help volunteers, new or returning, to become acquainted with life at the Village and to learn more about the new happenings and the many new displays at the museum.

Barton County Historical Society

There are many 'untold stories' about Great Bend Army Air Field during its brief, but very active, existence during World War II. One of those stories involves six young women, assigned to GBAAF as WASPs or Women Airforce Service Pilots. Karen Neuforth, Research Coordinator of the Barton County Historical Society, will tell that story at the regular meeting of the Society at 7:30 p.m. Monday. As always, the public is welcome to attend and learn more about our county's history.

Barton County 4H’ers compete in Pawnee County Air Rifle Competition

On Saturday, March 19 kids in the Barton County 4H Shooting Sports project traveled to Pawnee County to compete in the annual Pawnee County Shootout air rifle competition.

Great Bend Rotary

The Great Bend Rotary Club recently honored five new Paul Harris Fellows. They were Rotarians Ed Mauler, Devin McMillen, Dr. Patrick Stang, Dr. Tom Vernon and Rotary Spouse, Anna Burke. Rotarian Gary Burk was honored as a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow. District 5670 Governor Peter Marcus from Ness City made the presentation. A Paul Harris Fellow is a Rotarian that has contributed US$ 1,000 or more to the Annual Programs Fund, PolioPlus, or the Humanitarian Grants Program of Rotary. BCARSP Meeting

The Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel met at 11:30 a.m. on March 11 at the Club at StoneRidge. President Rose Kelly opened the meeting with the flag salute and Becky Dudrey gave the invocation. Thirty-eight members and one guest, Alicia Westhoff, were present. New members Steve Dayton, Janice Friedeman and Marcia Berchek were introduced.

Great Bend City Slickers December meeting

The regular monthly meeting of the Great Bend City Slickers 4-H Club was held on Dec. 18th. The meeting was called to order by President Caleb Maneth. There were 11 members, three leaders, 11 parents, and three visitors. The members discussed the 4-H council and livestock and new rules. Hailey Hicks had a Project Talk, Kyle Rhiza did a demonstration, and Josh Crawford had a Health and Safety talk. Club members held a white elephant exchange.

Kansas Singles in Agriculture to host National Convention in March

The Kansas Chapter of Singles in Agriculture will host the 2015 National Convention in conjunction with the Mid-American Ag. Expo on March 26 to 28 in Salina. Headquarters will be at the Ambassador Hotel and convention Center in Salina. Singles in Agriculture will have a booth at the Ag Expo on March 26th.

Preceptor Pi donates to Makinna Foundation and Kans for Kids

Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi presented monetary donations in January to the Makinna Ann Hope Foundation, established to help families with special-needs children, and Kans for Kids, which provides funding to help families with children living with cancer. In addition, members gave donations of food to the Barton County Food Bank.

The Great Bend Area Panhellenic is a local organization for alumni of the Greek sororities belonging to the National Panhellenic Conference. One objective of the group is to promote interfraternity, friendship and collaboration among Greek alumni.
