Seventh Annual Barton County 4-H Winter Classic

The Seventh Annual Barton County 4-H Winter Classic hosted over sixty 4-H members from nearby counties. Members participated in air rifle and archery competition to prepare for the upcoming state 4-H Shooting Sports Competition to be held April 16th at the Expo Grounds west of Great Bend.

Zeta Gamma Chapter of Epislon

Zeta Gamma Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha met on March 8 at the home of Karen Lindberg. Ten members were present with two members absent. Meeting included discussing the agenda for the upcoming months. We will be having a Wine Tasting/Birthday party this month. District H will be hosting a Tea Party/Installationat 1:30 p.m. on March 13 the at First Presbyterian Church with our chapter members hosting. Parnassus Club Annual Vocal and Piano Auditions

On March 5, The Parnassus Club held its annual vocal and piano auditions at Barton Community College Fine Arts Building. The 1st place piano award was given to Hannah Mosier of Great Bend, 2nd place piano award was given to Taylor Fry of Great Bend, and 3rd place piano award was given to Hannah Wilborn of Hoisington. Tiffany Harms, piano instructor at McPherson College and formerly of Great Bend judged the piano contestants. League of Women Voters

League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold the monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday at The Club at Stone Ridge. Lunch will be from the menu. The program will be provided by Phyllis Bosley, who will be speaking on the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome on children and ultimately the family. The luncheon is informal and time will be allowed for discussion from the floor. The public is invited to attend and participate.

Fundraiser for Claflin Lions Club

Lions Club annual District Convention

The Lions Clubs of Western Kansas District 17-K will hold their annual District Convention on Saturday, March 7, at Memorial Union on the Fort Hays State University Campus. International guests will be Yves and Dominique Leveille of Ormestown, Quebec, Canada.

Barton County 4-H Hosts Winter Classic

Barton County 4-H shooting sports leaders hosted the 11th annual Barton County 4-H Winter Classic on Saturday, February 21, at the Expo Complex. In the air rifle division, the scores at the end of the day were Sedgwick County – 2004 and Barton County – 2004. The tie was broken on the number of bulls shot by the four team members. Sedgwick County had 38 and Barton County had 34. The team members for Barton County were Parker Smith, Ryan Kohman, Katelyn Reh, and Lake Lyman. It was a very competitive match and all participants were congratulated on their hard work.

Garden Club enjoys lesson on soap making

At the February Great Bend Garden Club meeting, member Alice Young introduced Rebecca Ford who gave a fascinating introduction to the art of soap making. Her inspiration and mentor was a sister at a convent in Wichita whose homemade soaps provided funds for a church mission project.

Great Bend City Slickers December meeting

The regular monthly meeting of the Great Bend City Slickers 4-H Club was held on Dec. 18th. The meeting was called to order by President Caleb Maneth. There were 11 members, three leaders, 11 parents, and three visitors. The members discussed the 4-H council and livestock and new rules. Hailey Hicks had a Project Talk, Kyle Rhiza did a demonstration, and Josh Crawford had a Health and Safety talk. Club members held a white elephant exchange.

Kansas Singles in Agriculture to host National Convention in March

The Kansas Chapter of Singles in Agriculture will host the 2015 National Convention in conjunction with the Mid-American Ag. Expo on March 26 to 28 in Salina. Headquarters will be at the Ambassador Hotel and convention Center in Salina. Singles in Agriculture will have a booth at the Ag Expo on March 26th.
