The annual Mid-Winter Rally of Kansas Lions will take on an international flavor as they play host to Lions International Director Dr. Hauser Weiler of Virginia, on Jan. 17-19, at the Ramada Convention Center in Salina.
On Jan. 14, The Parnassus Club met at Coralie Button's residence. It was announced that the annual Parnassus auditions for local students in voice and piano will be held on March 1.
Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi started 2014 with a dinner meeting on Jan. 7 at the Classic Inn. President Cindy Meitler led the meeting with ten of the chapter's twelve members present.
League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold the monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday at Montana Mike's in the north room. Lunch will be from the menu and can be from their "quick serve" menu.
Great Bend City Slickers held their monthly meeting on Dec. 19, at the First Presbyterian Church. Members went Christmas caroling at Cherry Village. They returned to the church for a chili supper and club meeting. During the month of December the club brought Christmas gifts to the nuns, with some members providing them with table favors, and Poinsettia plants to the Senior Center. On December 14, the club rang bells at Walgreens and Walmart for the Salvation Army.

The Progress Club met on Jan. 6 at the home of Darlene Boley with Mary Ann Mull and Jeanne Gotsche as co-hostesses. Fifteen members attended. The meeting opened with a prayer followed by reading and approval of minutes. Darlene Mathers gave the treasurer's report. Correspondence included a thank you note for the club's donation to the Military Mom's project. Jackie Curtis shared a note from Skip Yowell who presented the Nov. program. The Otis Lions Club will hold a benefit Pancake Supper from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Otis Bison High school gymnasium. Cost per person is a free will donation. The 2nd Annual Pancake Races will start at 7:30 p.m. All proceeds will be used for Otis Beautification and youth projects in the local area with funds matched by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
Parnassus Club met on April 8, at Darline Boley's residence
On April 12, seven 4H'ers from Barton County, traveled to Alma to compete in the 2014 State 4H Air Rifle Match. There they competed against the best 4H air rifle shooters in the state. To qualify for the match, the 4H'ers had to shoot 400, or higher, out of a possible 600 points, at a qualifying match earlier in the year.
The Progress Club met on April 7, at the home of Sharon Mauler with Donna Oliver as co-hostess. Seventeen members were in attendance. Kim Roach of Great Bend Floral presented the program, "Pretty Posies." Kim has been in the floral business for several years and spoke about the recent innovations in her work. She demonstrated new ideas in making corsages and assembled two lovely floral arrangements.
