Kansas Quilter Organization spring meeting

MANHATTAN - The spring meeting of the Kansas Quilters Organization will be held June 2-3 in Manhattan at the Four Points by Sheraton. The featured speaker is Debbie Maddy from Texas, who designs quilt patterns for her company, Calico Carriage. On June 2, she will teach a workshop on her "Labyrinth" quilt pattern and she will also present programs during the KQO general meeting on June 3.

Great Bend Rotary meeting

On April 17, Rep. Roger Marshall addressed the Great Bend Rotary club. He emphasized that, at least among the freshman representatives, collaboration and collegiality were the rule rather than the exception. The health-care bill is still being worked on, and he looks forward to good, positive results with economic and tax reform issues as well.

LARNED - Diann Morell chaired the April 18 meeting of the Larned Quilting Bees guild and opened with a thank you note from Kevin and Leann Simmons for the prayer quilt constructed for Kevin.

Sterling American Legion Post #128 to host reunion/dinner

The Sterling American Legion Post #128 will host the Walter Vincent Iwo Jima and Veterans Dinner on May 6, at the Arden H. McKee American Legion Post #128, 108 East Garfield in Sterling. The event was founded by the late Walt Vincent in 1996, a Purple Heart recipient and an Iwo Jima veteran. Several years ago the committee began inviting other World War II veterans to the reunion and three years ago the invitation extended to all veterans.

Scares returning thanks to Russell Masonic Lodge

RUSSELL – For over two decades, kids of all ages were given a fright thanks to the Russell Arts Council Haunted House in downtown Russell. Former Russell Mayor Henrietta (Henri) Wenthe served as the "Head Witch in Charge," helping plan, construct and portray characters in the attraction which featured different themes throughout the years.

Lions refinish highway emblem

The Evening Lions Club is refinishing the Lions Emblems on the highway entrance to Great Bend. This is a project that was recommended by Lions International as a Legacy Project, since the Lions organization was founded 100 years ago in 1917, with the only thought of helping people who need help. They help the people in need with eye care, scholarships, and a whole lot more. Today the Organization is 1.4 million strong with clubs through out the world in over 210 counties.

Detective speaks to Progress Club

The Progress Club met on March 16 at the First Presbyterian Church. Seventeen members were present for the program presented by Heather Smith of the Great Bend Police Department on "Human Trafficking Here at Home."

Spring youth events start with SPIN

SPIN clubs are a "Special Interest" 4-H Club and any Barton County youth is invited to get involved in 4-H in this unique way. This will be an opportunity for youth in grades 1-5 to learn more about 4-H in Barton County and learn more about Foods. The Decorating Foods SPIN club will be held from 3:30–4:45 p.m. on Tuesdays April 18 through May 19, at the Extension Office. We will be decorating cupcakes and cookies but also fruit, vegetables and breads. Sign up at the Extension Office by April 11th.
