4H Air Rifle Season kicks off

The 2017 Kansas 4H Air Rifle Competition season started on Feb. 11, for the Barton County 4H'ers.

Golden Sheaf Chapter #226 Order of the Eastern Star meeting

Recently Golden Sheaf Chapter #226 Order of the Eastern Star, met and Grand Representatives of other Grand Jurisdictions in Kansas were honored. Golden Sheaf has three members serving in this capacity. They are Barbara Lear, Grand Representative of Tennessee in Kansas, Richard Tennet Grand Representative of British Columbia and Youkon in Kansas and Carol Anderson Grand Representative of Missouri in Kansas. The function of a Grand Representative is to foster friendship and fellowship with members of other Grand Jurisdictions. League of Women Voters meeting

The League of Women Voters position on school finance, led by Jai Marietta, will be the topic of discussion at the league's meeting at noon on Tuesday at the Classic Inn. Updating the League's handbook, which dates back for several years, is also planned. Questions and comments will be allowed from the floor. Lunch will be available from the buffet or menu.

Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group announces program

The Barton County Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at Trinity Methodist Church, 5700 Broadway Ave. in Great Bend. The program for the meeting is "Preserving Your Mental, Emotional, Physical and Psychological Health as a Caregiver."

TOPS starting Money Jar Challenge

Members of the TOPS Chapter 1151 in Great Bend will start a Money Jar Challenge at the next meeting, on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Participants will bring 10 dimes which will be going into a money jar over the next several weeks as members lose weight. The person who loses the most weight at the end of the challenge will get the jar.

Progress Club meeting

Progress Club was refreshed on January 9, 2017, at the Barton County Extension Office with a program presented by Donna Krug, Extension Agent. Her focus was on "Stay Strong, Stay Healthy", a new exercise class she is teaching.

St. Joseph-Ellinwood Knights of Columbus Council #1187 donation

The St. Joseph-Ellinwood Knights of Columbus Council #1187 donated proceeds from its annual Tootsie Roll drive and Pancake and Sausage Breakfast to area organizations that support individuals with intellectual disabilities. Debbie Reynolds, Executive Director of Sunflower Diversified Services, accepted a check for $432.14. Jim Boehnke, from the Barton County Special Olympics, accepted a check for $864.27.

Area Lions clubs hold joint meeting

The Claflin and the Hollyrood Lions clubs came together for a meeting with their Vice District Governor Reland Cole at Holyrood. Both clubs have their own meeting locations, though this time they met together to receive state and International information to better their use to the public in Holyrood and Claflin. Both clubs do a lot for their communities. The Holyrood club was chartered in April of 1947. They have been serving the local community since then, by contributing to elementary schools, the American Legion and the Senior Center. Preceptor Pi continues service projects in new year

Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi will donate $100 worth of items to the Boxes of Love project sponsored by United Way of Central Kansas. In February, these items for senior adults living alone who have no family or friends for help or companionship, and therefore depend on agencies for food and social contact, will be delivered by Meals on Wheels, ElderCare Home Services and Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice.
