Great Bend resident appointed Rotary District Governor

Dr. Roger Marshall, of Great Bend, has assumed the volunteer post of Rotary International district governor for 2014-15. As governor, Marshall coordinates the community and international service projects of the 32 clubs in district 5670 which encompasses the Central and Northwest Kansas area. He assumed office on July 1, and will serve through June 30, 2015.

P.E.O. STAR scholarship recipient

The prestigious P.E.O. STAR scholarship for the 2014-15 academic year was presented to Annie Schugart, of Overland Park, a senior at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Annie was sponsored by the Great Bend P.E.O. Chapter HR and was presented the certificate by Debbie Koelsch. Annie is the daughter of Jeff and Mary Schugart and the granddaughter of Larry and Kathy Schugart. She plans to attend Harvard in the fall and study English and Astrophysics. The P.E.O. DAV Chapter 27 fundraiser

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 27 in Great Bend will hold their annual "Forget-Me-Not" fundraiser, Friday July 4th at local business in Great Bend. Chapter members will be at both Dillons stores, WalMart, and Waters True Value Hardware.

Fundraiser for Claflin Lions Club

Claflin Lions Club members will be selling tickets for their Annual Seafood Buffet now through March 20. The menu for the evening will include all you can eat servings of fish, shrimp, clam chowder, scalloped potatoes, vegetables, bread, coffee or tea.

Lions Club annual District Convention

The Lions Clubs of Western Kansas District 17-K will hold their annual District Convention on Saturday, March 7, at Memorial Union on the Fort Hays State University Campus. International guests will be Yves and Dominique Leveille of Ormestown, Quebec, Canada.

Barton County 4-H Hosts Winter Classic

Barton County 4-H shooting sports leaders hosted the 11th annual Barton County 4-H Winter Classic on Saturday, February 21, at the Expo Complex. In the air rifle division, the scores at the end of the day were Sedgwick County – 2004 and Barton County – 2004. The tie was broken on the number of bulls shot by the four team members. Sedgwick County had 38 and Barton County had 34. The team members for Barton County were Parker Smith, Ryan Kohman, Katelyn Reh, and Lake Lyman. It was a very competitive match and all participants were congratulated on their hard work.

Garden Club enjoys lesson on soap making

At the February Great Bend Garden Club meeting, member Alice Young introduced Rebecca Ford who gave a fascinating introduction to the art of soap making. Her inspiration and mentor was a sister at a convent in Wichita whose homemade soaps provided funds for a church mission project.

Great Bend City Slickers December meeting

The regular monthly meeting of the Great Bend City Slickers 4-H Club was held on Dec. 18th. The meeting was called to order by President Caleb Maneth. There were 11 members, three leaders, 11 parents, and three visitors. The members discussed the 4-H council and livestock and new rules. Hailey Hicks had a Project Talk, Kyle Rhiza did a demonstration, and Josh Crawford had a Health and Safety talk. Club members held a white elephant exchange.

Kansas Singles in Agriculture to host National Convention in March

The Kansas Chapter of Singles in Agriculture will host the 2015 National Convention in conjunction with the Mid-American Ag. Expo on March 26 to 28 in Salina. Headquarters will be at the Ambassador Hotel and convention Center in Salina. Singles in Agriculture will have a booth at the Ag Expo on March 26th.
