HHS Principal receives 2009 educator award
By KAREN LA PIERRE
November 7, 2009 @ 11:55pmHOISINGTON — Hoisington High School Principal Benjamin Jacobs has received a 2009 Educator Award from Yale University in a program to recognize outstanding educators from around the world who have supported and inspired their students to achieve.
Nominated by incoming Yale freshman Dakota Meyers, Jacobs was chosen based on the letter Meyers wrote on his behalf.
“Mr. Jacobs provided rare support to me throughout my time at Hoisington High School,” Meyers wrote in his recommendation letter. “Furthermore, he applies this sort of support to the entirety of the student body instead of a few select students; this sets him apart from other educators.
“He has inspired both myself and my schoolmates, and I feel no one to be more deserving of the honor.”
Meyers also said he admires his former principal’s dedication to academics and appreciates the encouragement Jacobs gave to him for his aspirations to attend an Ivy League college.
Yale freshmen were invited to nominate an educator who helped shape them and encouraged them to achieve at high levels. Fifty-two educators from around the country received recognition.
“Mr. Jacobs does an outstanding job as HHS principal,” said Bill Lowry, USD 431 superintendent. “This is an great honor for Mr. Jacobs and for USD 431. This is another example of the great staff that we have in Hoisington.”
Jacobs has been the principal at HHS for four years. Prior to that, he was the assistant principal at Ellinwood High School for two years.
“I would also like to personally thank Dakota Meyers, Yale freshman, for nominating me for this award,” said the principal. “I'm very proud of his accomplishments and his representation of HHS at a prestigious Ivy League school. I am humbled by his actions of thinking of me for this award.
“The best thing about being a principal is having the opportunity to model appropriate actions to an entire building, both students and staff,” said Jacobs. “I hope that every day I make a positive impact on each of my staff and students, and give them a definitive reason to do the right thing.”
The USD 431 Board of Education recognized Jacobs at its meeting on Monday.
