November 21, 2009 @ 6:49pmShafer Gallery at Barton Community College is getting into the holiday spirit with its annual tree display. Nine area schools or youth groups are decorating trees, said Megan Benitz, director of the gallery.
Look for homemade ornaments on trees decorated by children, including Claflin Grade School and the Eisenhower Girl Scout Troop 20210 from Great Bend.
The German Club and the Spanish Club at Great Bend High School also decorated trees this week. On Thursday, students of GBHS Spanish teacher Zusseth Pinillo adorned their tree with flags of Spanish-speaking countries and ribbons with messages including “Merry Christmas” and the Spanish equivalent, “Feliz Navidad.”
More trees will be decorated Monday and next week. In addition to the trees decorated by youths, Barton faculty have a 10th tree reserved and will decorate it at 6 p.m. Monday, prior to the 6:30 p.m. performance of the play “True West” in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Faculty members have been asked to bring ornaments that represent being a teacher, or the subject they teach, to place on their tree.
Other trees are being decorated by Barton County 4-H, Holy Family School, Great Bend Recreation Commission and Ellinwood Elementary.
The exhibit, along with the Studio Lindsborg exhibit and items from the college’s permanent art college, are on display through Dec. 7. There will be an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. Benitz said there will be music and refreshments.
