Great Bend city employees were busy Wednesday running last-minute checks of Christmas decorations and, as was the case in the picture, repairing damage done by vandals. Christmas activities open in Great Bend Saturday with the annual parade and festivities.

Parade, activities open holiday season

November 26, 2009 @ 11:37amCome Saturday, it will begin to look a lot like Christmas in Great Bend with the annual Christmas Parade and opening of a host of local holiday traditions.
“I think it will be a fun evening,” said Sarah Krom of Sunflower Diversified Services, the organization that sponsors the parade. Looking at the mild weather forecast, “this could be our best year yet.”
The parade at 5:30 p.m. will launch the festivities. With the theme “Songs of the Season,” there are 34 entries, which is up from parades past. “We have some new things this year,” Krom said.
Among the additions are two motorcycle groups, a color guard and some new businesses that decided to participate. There will also be a pre-school that has formed a marching band.
Of course, the final entry will be the arrival of Santa, riding in a carriage provided by Rosewood Services. After the parade, a bus will shuttle participants back to Brit Spaugh Park.
Other Saturday night events include the opening of Santa’s House, the Trail of Lights, Santas from Around the World, Barton County Arts Council Open House and the opening of the free ice skating rink. The MyTown stores will sponsor a cookie contest and many businesses will offer special sales.
But, Krom said they have bigger plans for the event. “What we’re really shooting for is a holiday festival.”
They hope to have activities running Friday through Sunday. Next year, they will work on Friday, and may try to start some sort of children’s program.
