The City of Great Bend announced Tuesday the start of the 2019 City Connecting LINK Improvement Project on 10th Street. Contractors will put up traffic control on 10th Street (US-56) 1,300 feet from Kiowa Road to Hickory Street starting Wednesday.

Traffic can expect lane closures which will reduce traffic to the inside lanes, said Public Works Director Simon Wiley. This will not affect any access to businesses and they will begin milling asphalt on the outside lanes.

“The City of Great Bend appreciates the patience of motorists and residents while this work is being performed,” Wiley said. This construction is estimated to be substantially complete in 60 calendar days, which puts it into mid-September.

City Connecting LINKs is a Kansas Department of Transportation program. This provides 90-10 match for such projects.

Venture Corporation of Great Bend is the contractor for the job and the bid was $490,217.50. The city’s portion is 10% of the cost with the remainder coming from KDOT, Wiley said. However, the city utilizes Federal Fund Exchange grants (also through KDOT) to cover that, so it isn’t costing tax payers in city taxes or special street taxes.
