Richard J. (Rick) Harman
HOISINGTON — If there ever was a man that always saw the doughnut, never the hole, it was Rick Harman. Rick passed away peacefully Feb. 23. Soon after his birth in Leon on March 30, 1928, to Walt “Peaches” and Lucy “Pearl” Harman, an oil rig wildcatter and a rural schoolteacher, the family settled in Hoisington, and Big Rick was on the ‘up” escalator from his earliest days.
An All-State athlete in high school basketball and track, as well as a scholar student, he moved on to Kansas State University. Rick was big man on campus, recognized as All Big Seven basketball forward in 1949, and All-American in 1950. President of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, he became student council president his senior year. While at K-State, Rick’s attention was captured by a scintillating brunette, Susanne Green, from Kansas City, whom he married in 1949.
After a stint in the Air Force, he began his career in the restaurant industry, working with his father-in-law at Myron Green Cos. Throughout his career, Rick parlayed his humanitarian interests and followed an upward path with tenures as president of both the Missouri and National Restaurant Associations. He championed equal rights, evidenced by his strident efforts to create an integrated working environment in the restaurant industry.
Rick had a prominent career in politics, capped by his selection as Republican standard bearer for Kansas governor in 1968. He served on the U.S. Olympic Committee in 1974. A longtime member in Kansas City Rotary No. 13, serving as president and host in 1985 for the International Convention in Kansas City.
In the 90s, Rick served on the Kansas Board of Regents, where he continued to advocate for universal educational opportunities, focusing on expansion of junior colleges and satellite campuses.
All-State, All-American, All-Everything, his accomplishments are too numerous to cover in this space. Rick never lost his curiosity to dream, and constantly challenged convention with the “why nots” and “what ifs”; he was “one of the top Kansas citizens of his generation.”
The patriarch of family gatherings, Rick initiated the grandchildren to joys of good-natured competition by pounding them at the popular word game Boggle.
Rick is survived by his wife Susie Harman; his children, son Richard W. Harman, daughters Betsy Holland, Sally Jones, and their spouses Ed Holland and Sandy Jones; and grandchildren Abby Holland, Kevin Holland and expectant wife Gina Holland, and James P. McGilley IV.
A gathering of friends and family in Rick’s honor will be held Friday at 6 p.m. at McGilley Chapel on State Line, Kansas City.
The memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Presbyterian Village Church.
His family is a true rainbow coalition, with colors ranging from purple and white, black and gold to crimson and blue. But there will always be a soft spot for Every man a Wildcat.
