Mildred Irene Pommerenke 1917 - 2017

LENEXA — Mildred Irene Pommerenke, 100, passed away quietly as she watched the sunset on her porch, Oct. 9, 2017, at Greenwood Terrace in Lenexa, where she lived for the past two years. She recently celebrated her 100th birthday with her sons, grandchildren, and staff who cared for her. Irene was born Aug. 4, 1917, the daughter of Cecil and Pearl Cole of Clay Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband Adolf “Gus” Pommerenke, a chiropractor in Great Bend for many years.
She was active in the Presbyterian Church where she was known for her floral arrangements and other crafts that she donated to many fundraising activities. She was an active volunteer and member of the Great Bend Historical Society and the Santa Fe Trail Association.
She is survived by three sons and their families, Norman Pommerenke and his wife Susan of Overland Park, Forrest Pommerenke and his wife Jan currently of Thames, New Zealand, and Roger Pommerenke and his wife Mandy of Roanoke, Va. She has seven grandchildren all of whom remember her as a gentle and loving example of a life well lived.
According to her wishes, her passing was followed by cremation with a memorial service to be planned in Great Bend in the future.
