Great Bend’s Keaton Sander (138) tied the school record for career pins to spark the Panthers past Hays High 48-30 Thursday night.
A fired-up crowd roared every time the Panthers won a match for a stunning 39-0 lead. The Panthers won seven matches on pins, including the final match by 285-pound Noah Presson.
State-ranked Sander pinned Kyle Casper in 3:48 that helped the Panthers roar to a 39-0 lead after seven matches. It was Sander’s 65th career pin that ties Cody Liles’ school record. Sander needs three more pins to tie Liles’ single-season pin record.
Also winning via pins were Drew Liles (106), Eric Vazquez (120), George Weber (126), Conrad Montoya (132) and Gage Fritz (145). Carsyn Schooler (113) won 6-0 over Cy Bender. Fritz broke the single-season takedown record with 74 surpassing Goodyear who recorded 68 takedowns in 1994.
“I was extremely pleased with how we ended the regular season taking third in the WAC and going 9-5 in duals this season,” said Great Bend coach Nathan Broeckelman. “Our young wrestlers are starting to wrestle like they are hungry for a state medal. Having the young team has helped push our upperclassman to get better. I’m looking forward to seeing where we sit come next week at Class 5A regionals.
The Panthers were excellent on their feet, earning the first takedown and they finished the job with dominant pins.
Hays High rallied within 39-12 on wins by Conrad Vajnar (152) and Xavier Dandurand (160), but Panther Jacob Meeks (170) secured the dual meet victory with a 5-1 win over Chase Voth. Hays High’s Jon Springer (182), Brayden Dorzweiler (195) and Trey Van Pelt (220) earned pins for a 42-30 score.
But Presson finished the night with a pin in 1:30 over Logan Schulte. The Panthers won nine of 14 matches.
