Vitzum leads TMP past Great Bend

POSTED February 13, 2018 11:14 p.m.

HAYS — The pesky Great Bend Panther girls kept battling back from double-digit deficits against No. 2 state-ranked 3A Thomas More Prep.
But they had no defensive answers for high-scoring Kayla Vitztum who scored 30 points in the Monarchs’ 64-51’ non-league basketball victory. The Panthers fouled Vitztum three times in the fourth quarter and she converted all six free throws, 12 of 12 for the game.
Great Bend (3-14) sliced an 18-point first-half lead (34-16) to 41-30 in the third quarter and nine points in the fourth quarter keyed by seven 3-point goals. The Panthers converted six 3-pointers in the second and third quarters. They outscored the Monarchs by nine points from the second quarter into the fourth quarter.
Bethany College signee Carley Brack scored 13 points and Camryn Dunekack scored 11 points. Brack, Alyssa Herter, Dunekack, Jenna Mauler, Jaclynn Schroeder, Kaylee Unruh and Annie Mills each converted 3-point goals.
“It was too little, too late,” said Great Bend coach Carrie Minton. “We fought all the way back. But we made too many mistakes.”
The Monarchs converted five 3-pointers to balance Vitztum’s attacking offensive style. Aubrey Koenigsman made a trio of 3-pointers. Vitztum scored 18 second-half points.
“Their girls are tremendous shooters and they made us pay when we didn’t defend them,” Minton said. “All those small things add up.”
The Panthers have lost nine consecutive games since they defeated Buhler 52-38 Jan. 12.
The Panthers’ five-game road trip covering 500 miles ends Friday at Dodge City. The Panthers return home Saturday to play Liberal.
