Kelly takes fourth at loaded Bob Smith Open at Fort Hays

POSTED December 4, 2017 11:03 p.m.

HAYS — The Barton wrestling team competed in one of the toughest meets it will compete in all year this past weekend.
The Cougars battled several ranked grapplers from NCAA Division I and II and it showed in the overall record of 13-26 during the Bob Smith Open on the campus of Fort Hays State University.
The meet featured traditional national NCAA powers Oklahoma State and the University of Nebraska. Currently, Oklahoma State in ranked No. 3 in the nation and Nebraska No. 11.
In addition to the NCAA D-I powers, Top 25 NCAA D-II schools Central Oklahoma, Nebraska-Kearney and host Fort Hays State were also wrestling at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
While that 13-26 record may not look that good, Barton’s record against fellow NJCAA schools was pretty darn good. Against other 2-year schools, the Cougars were 7-1.
Barton lost seven of its matches to Oklahoma State and Nebraska. Eight more losses came to Central Oklahoma, Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State. That is more than half of the losses for Barton during the meet.
David Kelly was the only Barton wrestler to place, taking fourth place at the 174-pound division. Kelly received a bye in the opening round then pinned Brayden Collins of Neosho in 3:30. In the quarterfinals, Kelly lost to Mikey Labriola of Nebraska by a 23-8 count.
Labriola went on to win the bracket while Kelly made it all the way through the consolation bracket to wrestle for third place. Kelly lost that third place match Central Oklahoma’s Miguel Barreras.
A trio of Cougars went 2-2 on the day but didn’t place. Gage McBride (165), Victor Monarrez (174), and Brix Brickey (285) all won a pair of matches at the meet.
Brickey made it to the quarterfinals before losing to Dakota Gulley of Fort Hays State by a narrow 5-2 decision.
Barton has one more day of wrestling before the Christmas break. Barton will travel to Crete, Neb. for the Doane College Open on Saturday. The meet will start at 9 a.m.
