Barton County Academy Director Becky Gillette compared her 13 new graduates to Christopher Columbus when she spoke at their commencement ceremony Tuesday evening. Columbus thought he could reach China by sailing west, but ended up in a New World.
“He never made it to China,” Gillette said. “When you think you know where you are and you think you know where you’re going, nine times out of 10 you'll bump into North America.”
The students at Barton County Academy haven’t followed the traditional path to a high school diploma. Most are in their 20s, some are older, but after turning the tassels on their mortarboards Tuesday, all are “officially graduates,” Gillette said. “You have traveled your lives to get to this point. Good job!”

Many of the friends and family members who have joined the students on their journeys attended the graduation ceremony, which was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend, and the reception that followed.
The graduates received certificates of completion at the ceremony, but all have earned high school diplomas which they will receive in the mail.
Honor Society students were Guadalupe Allende, Rafaela Batres, Martha Delgadillo, Jacob R. Diehl, Claudia Marina Garcia-Chavez, Adriana Del Carmen Martinez, Yolanda Munoz Pin and Abdias Carlo Rodriquez.
Also in the Class of 2017: Brittney D. Collins, Matthew Irving, Trenton B. McFarren, Elani Dale Popkey and Jonathan L. Walker.
