October 28, 2009 @ 6:47pmThe Barton Community College men’s soccer team joined the Cougar women in the Region VI Final Four Saturday at Hummer Park in Topeka.
The Cougars overcame a free kick from 30 yards out by Cowley County’s Marko Bukva 13 seconds into Tuesday night’s Region VI first round game at Great Bend High School Memorial Stadium and defeated the Tigers 4-1.
The soccer game attracted a good crowd at Memorial Stadium despite 30 degree temperatures and howling winds.
Cowley County finished the season with a 6-9-1 record.
Barton scored three goals in the first half to take a 3-1 lead. Kevin Ellis scored two of the goals and Tom Shaw added the other. The Cougars’ Dula Fadis tacked on an insurance goal for the final 4-1 margin.
Leandro Reis had three assists and Harry Newman one.
Ellis now has 21 goals, Fadis four and Shaw two. Reis has 15 assists.
"We’re very excited," said Barton men’s soccer coach Oliver Twelvetrees. "It was a first class performance. It was a phenomenal effort."
Twelvetrees said the Cougars did a good job overcoming the early Cowley County goal.
"It was a great goal by them on the free kick," Twelvetrees said. "The boys didn’t let it phase them."
Twelvetrees said the Cougars are fired up for the Region VI semifinals.
"We’ve got to go on and win this tournament," he said.
Barton (16-3), the No. 2 seed in the Region VI Tournament and ranked No. 9 in NJCAA Division I, will play Garden City (15-3) in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Garden City defeated Kansas City Kansas Tuesday night.
The Garden City martchup is a re-match of last year’s finals. Barton tied Garden City 1-1 in regulation and lost 4-3 in a shootout. The Cougars defeated KCK 2-1 in the semifinals in 2008.
The winner will be the favorite to win the finals as No. 1 seed Johnson County was upset in the opening round by No. 8 seed Allen County 3-1. Allen will play No. 4 seed Cloud in the other contest. Cloud defeated No. 5 seed Neosho 2-0.
Allen and Cloud will kick off at 4 p.m. in the first men’s semifinal.
The finals are at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Cougar men join the Barton women’s soccer team at the Region VI finals.
The Barton women (16-3) will play Butler County (15-5-1) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Hutchinson plays Johnson County at 11 a.m. Saturday. The women’s championship game is at noon Sunday.
