HESSTON – Another victim was claimed by the freight train that is the Barton women’s soccer team Friday evening.

The Cougars ran their streak to nine straight wins with an 8-0 win Hesston in a game moved up a day due to impending weather conditions.

The match was set for Saturday night but was moved to Friday night in Hesston. The win kept Barton unbeaten in the Jayhawk West at 9-0-1. The Cougars are now 10-2-1 overall.

Hesston is still winless at 0-10 and 0-13 on the season.

Barton is alone at the top of the West with just four regular season matches left on the schedule. The Cougars will travel to Pratt and Dodge City before a crucial match-up with Cloud County Oct. 17 that will most likely decide the West winner. Cloud is 8-1 in the West and 10-1 overall. The Thunderbirds only loss this season was to Barton.

Seven different Cougars scored for the nations most productive offense. Laura Maria was the only Barton player to score twice in the game. Sara Martin scored her first goal of the season to cap the Cougars’ scoring on the night.

Barton leads the nation in goal per game this season at 7.38 per contest. That is well ahead of the second best from Monroe (NY), which is averaging 6.83 per outing. There are just five teams in the NJCAA averaging 6.0 or more goals per game.

Rayssa Neres added to her West-leading total with her 30th of the season. That is the second most in the NJCAA this season behind Roosa Ariyo of Monroe at 35.

Also among the national leaders is Laura Maria with 13 assists. That is good for fifth in the NJCAA.

Barton will travel to Dodge City Wednesday to take on the Conquistadors. Dodge is currently fourth the West with a 5-4 mark and is 6-6-1 overall. Barton beat Dodge 6-0 in the first meeting, the closest score for any team not named Cloud or Hutchinson in the conference this year.

Barton will be at Pratt Saturday before the showdown Cloud the following week.
