When Dodge City visits Memorial Stadium for Great Bend’s football Homecoming, the Red Demons will feature a shifty runner while the Panthers will showcase an efficient passer.

Red Demon quarterback Beau Foster has rushed for 258 yards and three scores. Foster sealed a 49-27 victory over Wichita Heights with a 48-yard touchdown run. However, Foster’s biggest play occurred defensively when he tackled Heights quarterback K’Vonte Baker on fourth down with Dodge City up 35-27.

Dodge City scored on Cedric Rosales’ blocked punt and Lakin Scheck’s pass to tight end Sam Mead from field goal formation.

Brack threw for 351 yards and five touchdowns in a 56-34 loss to Wichita Northwest to push his season totals to 694 yards and seven scores. Panther Alex Schremmer has 21 catches for 448 yards and four scores.

Dodge City (2-1) and Great Bend (2-1, 1-0 WAC) will battle for first place.

“We control our own destiny,” said Great Bend coach Erin Beck. “If you win the football game, you’ll enjoy the homecoming festivities. A team that keeps fighting is going to get better. Hopefully, that will show against Dodge City.”

Typically, every Western Athletic Conference game is hotly-contested.

“The WAC is usually a grind-it-out game because teams know your team really well,” said Beck. “It’s a fun program to play. They’re well coached and fundamentally sound. They are tough kids.”

The Panthers play back-safety Dalton Miller both offensively and defensively while the Red Demons play five starters on both sides of the football.

‘The biggest advantage of playing one way is you can practice as an offensive unit and get better during the week,” Beck said.

‘The Panthers competed favorably offensively with five touchdowns passing. Beck likes the fact the Panthers have shown the ability to run and pass. The Panthers wisely elected to run against Hays and throw against Wichita Northwest.

“We’re an offense that takes what they are giving us,” Beck said. “The run has to set up the pass and we want to control the line of scrimmage. We’d like to start games better and identify what the defense is doing earlier in the game.”

When the Grizzlies committed to man-to-man pass coverage, the Panthers beat them for 63, 77 and 84-yard scoring strikes.

“Our quarterback and receivers were loving it,” Beck said. “It was fun offensively that second half.”

The Panther defense played 96 snaps and yielded more than 600 yards last week against a talented Wichita Northwest team.

“We’ve got to play better,” Beck said. “We’ve got to rally to the football and tackle better.”
