Albert L. Rice 1916 - 2009

Albert L. Rice, 93, of Great Bend died Nov. 3 at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. He was born July 10, 1916, at Fort Supply, Okla., the son of Bert and Elizabeth Willinger Rice. He married Edna Mettscher on June 20, 1934, at St. John. They enjoyed 71 1/2 years of marriage until her death on Nov. 10, 2005. Albert was an electrician and a carpenter. He worked 15 years at the St. John Power Plant and worked at the Marlette Coach Company in Great Bend for 20 years. Albert was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, serving on the USS Pine Island from 1944-1946.

Mr. Rice was a member of The American Legion Post No. 180 and the Eagles Lodge, both of Great Bend.

Survivors include one son, Milton Rice and wife Merita of Pawnee Rock; one daughter, Barbara Robertson and husband Larry of Wichita; one grandson, Ryan Robertson and wife Megan of Wichita; and one great-granddaughter, Lucy Robertson of Wichita. Albert was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

A memorial graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Great Bend Cemetery, with the Rev. Dick Ogle officiant. Inurnment will take place, with military honors provided by a U.S. Navy Honor Guard. There will be no visitation, as cremation has taken place. Donations to a memorial fund for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital may be made in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be sent and notice viewed at www.bryantfh.net.
