Three Olsburg ranches will highlight working facilities that utilize low stress methods to quietly and effectively process cattle, sheep and goats on May 3rd. The tour will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m. at the Edwards Ranch, 15225 Dry Creek Road, 2.4 miles west of Olsburg and 2.9 south on Dry Creek Road. The working facility designed by Bill, which he can operate alone, will be demonstrated at 10 a.m.
A catered picnic lunch will be served at noon at the Joseph Hubbard Barn, 5025 Highway 16, Olsburg. Hubbard raises sheep and goats, and will demonstrate the facility he designed using Bud Williams’ philosophies for low stress, small animal handling.
Alan Hubbard is one of the first ranchers in Northeast Kansas to adopt Rotational Grazing (MiG, Management-intensive Grazing.) Alan will present his lessons learned with cattle handling and grazing management. The tour will then proceed to the low stress facilities designed to work in-sync with livestock psychology and behavior to minimize stress and improve the safety of both animals and the rancher.
Another low stress method for cattle handling is specially designed portable corral systems that can be moved to various pasture and feeding locations for cattle working, sorting, and loading. An on-site demonstration of the Rawhide Portable Corral will also take place during the tour, which should conclude by 4 p.m.
