Based upon recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and executive order 20-04 from the State of Kansas, Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), in order to minimize the threat of COVID-19 for Barton County and the City of Great Bend, the decision has been made to cancel GBRC sponsored events and programs and recreation centers until May 1 to protect public health.
At this time, all recreation programs, activities and recreation centers will be closed or cancelled during this time period, effective immediately. This includes youth sports, adult sports, after school programs, enrichment, fitness programs and wellness center. GBRC will continue accepting enrollments for summer programs and sports programs through online registrations or by telephone. According to Executive Director Diann Henderson, however, the My Backyard Playground located at 2715 18th St. is still open as normal.
The Rec Commission office and Activity Center offices will remain functional via telephone or email communications. The Rec Commission’s intention is to open facilities and programs after May 1. They will continue to work closely with local, county and state agencies in restoring Great Bend’s recreation programs and activities. This is an unprecedented and fluid situation, and GBRC will notify the public of any changes as soon as possible.
Henderson said, “We understaind this brings a lot of questions and uncertainty as it pertains to planning for your family. We appreciate your patience as we are limiting staff to help ensure their health and safety as well.”
