More than 14% of COVID-19 tests in county nursing homes are positiv

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reports there have been 368,976 positive COVID-19 cases to date as of 9 a.m. Monday, resulting in 12,711 hospitalizations and 5,557 statewide deaths. There were 3,203 new cases, 42 new hospitalizations and 10 new deaths since Friday, Aug. 27. The number of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MID-C) cases was unchanged at 18.

Here is the total number of confirmed and probable cases for area counties Monday, and any change since Friday:

• Barton 2,934 (+29 since Friday)

• Ellsworth 1,279 (+2)

• Pawnee 1,206 (-1)

• Rice 1,173 (+10)

• Rush 459 (no change)

• Russell 927 (+2)

• Stafford 395 (no change)

No new deaths related to COVID-19 have been reported in area counties.

There have been no new hospitalizations reported for Barton and Pawnee counties.


Great Bend USD 428

Great Bend USD 428 updates its data on COVID-19 cases each Monday as information becomes available. As of Aug. 29, the district reported 12 active positive cases and two resolved positive cases (one each at Great Bend High School and Lincoln Elementary School).

The breakdown for positive active cases being tracked is:

Nursing home testing

The Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services and KDHE are allocating lab resources to nursing homes and long-term care facilities to provide state-funded COVID-19 screening tests through the Kansas COVID-19 Unified Testing Strategy effort announced by Governor Laura Kelly.

Counties are color-coded as follows:

Green: 14-day percent positivity 5% or less, OR fewer than 20 tests performed

Yellow: 14-day between 5-10% positivity OR greater than 10% and total tests fewer than 2,000 people per 100,000 population

Red: 14-day greater than 10% and does not meet green or yellow criteria.

Four of the counties in the Golden Belt – Barton, Ellsworth, Rice and Rush – were coded red, while Pawnee and Russell counties were coded yellow and Stafford County was coded green.

Here are the latest reports for area counties for the period starting Aug. 15 and ending Aug. 28:

• Barton - Red - Total tests 637 (92 positive and 545 negative). Positive rate: 14.4%

• Ellsworth - Red - Total tests 199 (30 positive and 169 negative). Positive rate: 15.1%

• Pawnee - Yellow - Total tests 150 (14 positive and 136 negative). Positive rate: 9.3%

• Rice - Red - Total tests 439 (50 positive and 389 negative). Positive rate: 11.4%

• Rush - Red - Total tests 80 (9 positive and 71 negative). Positive rate: 11.3%

• Russell - Yellow - Total tests 130 (25 positive plus 105 negative). Positive rate: 19.2%

• Stafford - Green - Total tests 124 (6 positive and 118 negative). Positive rate: 4.8%
