Resident death reported at Ellsworth Correctional Facility
Pandemic cases continue to rise

The Kansas Department of Corrections reports an Ellsworth Correctional Facility resident who died Monday, Nov. 2, had tested positive for COVID-19. This is the second resident death from ECF and the ninth resident death related to COVID-19 for the KDOC.

The resident was moved Oct. 28 to the Lansing Correctional Facility COVID-19 Management Unit after testing positive for the virus. He was transported from LCF to the hospital on Oct. 29.

The resident was a 76-year-old white male with underlying medical concerns that contributed to his condition. He was serving a sentence of 14 years and eight months for two counts of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child and aggravated endangerment of a child.

The Ellsworth Correctional Facility opened in 1988. Serving only males, the Central Unit provides housing for 820 multi-custody residents and the East Unit provides housing for 95 minimum-custody residents.

Great Bend USD 428

Great Bend USD 428 has received several notifications of positive COVID-19 cases since the last report of notification on Thursday, Oct. 29:

• Saturday, Oct. 31, a staff member at Lincoln Elementary tested positive. No additional quarantines expected.

• Saturday, a student at Lincoln tested positive. No additional quarantines expected.

• Sunday, a student at Great Bend High School tested positive. Eight additional quarantines expected for close contact.

• Sunday, a student at GBHS tested positive. Four additional quarantines expected for close contact.

• Sunday, a staff member at Eisenhower Elementary tested positive. No additional quarantines expected.

• Monday, a staff member at GBHS tested positive. No additional quarantines expected.


Statewide

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment updates its COVID-19 statistics every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. As of 9 a.m. Monday, there have been 89,227 COVID-19 cases, resulting in 3,893 hospitalizations and 1,046 statewide deaths. There were 4,046 new cases, 17 new deaths and 61 new hospitalizations reported since Friday, Oct. 30.

The state figures also showed an increase in the number of Barton County cases since Friday. According to the KDHE statistics, Barton County has had 821 cases. The last report from Barton County Public Information Officer Donna Zimmerman, released at 4 p.m. Friday, showed 797 cases for the county.
