Eighteen members of the Great Bend Garden Club met on March 17 at the county extension office.
Alice Young, chair of the Rose Garden Committee, suggested that the rose garden at the cemetery could be improved by installing edging around the rose beds. She also presented information concerning three possible edging products that could be used. Consideration of installing edging will follow further study.
Following some discussion, it was decided to hold a work day at 10:00 a.m. on April 14, to begin preparing the rose garden for summer by pruning, cleaning and defining the borders of the rose beds.
Delores Grose reminded members that names for the Rose Garden Memorial plaques need to be given to her by May 15.
Becky Dudrey presented an informative program on Easter lilies. She began with the introduction of the Easter lily to America when a World War I soldier returning from Japan brought bulbs back to an area along the Pacific Coast bordering both Oregon and California. Today all of the world’s commercial Easter lilies are grown in this beautiful area. Becky gave useful tips on the purchase, home care, and outdoor transplanting of the lily bulbs. She also shared the religious traditions of the Easter lily and added a few amusing stories of the mythology surrounding the lilies.
The members enjoyed the refreshments of Eileen Ingersol during at the meeting.
