Barton County Historical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Monday in the main museum library, just south of the Ark River Bridge on Highway 281. David Barnes, Director of Shafer Gallery at Barton Community College will provide the program, Native American Art and Culture.
David Barnes is currently Director of the Shafer Memorial Gallery at Barton Community College. Barnes earned his M.F.A. in painting and criticism from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College, in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. He also holds an M.A in History from Missouri State University.
Prior to his appointment at Penn State University in 1997, Mr. Barnes was Assistant Professor of Art and Art History at Montana State University - Billings. While in Montana he took the opportunity to immerse himself in Native American culture. He lived for a time with a Crow family and became very involved in the Native American Church. He says, “I never learned to dance with wolves but I did learn the proper way to sweat with Crows.” His interests lay primarily in time constructions found in non-western cultures and in literature. In 2003 he was awarded the Penn State University Advisory Board Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching.
In addition, Mr. Barnes remarks will provide an opportunity to appreciate our display “First Peoples” as well as beadwork “whimsys” for the tourist trade, both on loan from collector and historian, Robert Button.
