Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 and its Ladies Auxiliary hosted representatives of Quilts of Valor presentation on Veterans Day, Nov. 11th. Quilts of Valor became a national organization with the beginning started by a Blue Star Mom, Catherine Roberts, of Seaford, Del., because of her son, Nathaniel’s year long deployment to Iraq. Her desire was to see that returning veterans were welcomed home with love and gratitude that they deserved. QOV’s are stitched with love, prayers and healing thoughts. Combat troops who have been wounded or touched by war are awarded a tangible token of appreciation that unequivocally says “Thank you for your service, sacrifice and valor.” As of May of 2012 there have been 65,000 quilts awarded to service members/veterans. Veterans were represented by the Army, Navy and Marines who had served in World War II, Vietnam, Korea, Bosnia, Panama, Desert Storm, Samolia, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. They included Alfred Reichuber, Jake Radke, Burt Thompson, Mike Kutlgen and David Lebben, all of Great Bend and Mark Bartlett of Albert.
