Earn a ticket to the library pool party

Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! This coming week is our final week of summer. We have activities each and every day this week, followed by our end-of-summer pool party on Friday, August 5. As a reminder, this is a private pool party, and the only way to get in is with a ticket earned by completing our Summer Reading Program. To make sure you get your ticket for the party, turn in your minutes by July 29, which is also the last day for teens to pick up any Library Loot they’ve earned and for adults to submit prize drawing entries. The Teen Library Loot Prize Auction and Adult Summer Reading prize drawing will both be Saturday, July 30. Children have until August 14 to turn in their minutes for prizes, but the initial goal reading minutes need to be turned in by July 29 to get that pool party ticket.

Coming up next week, we have our regular 10:30 a.m. Children’s events, starting with Reading to Luna on Monday, followed by Whale Tale and Coral Reef Readers Story Times this Tuesday, and the last session of our We Grow Corn Series on Thursday. Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. the Kansas Oil and Gas Museum will be here to teach people of all ages about Kansas’s deep history in the energy, oil, and natural gas industry. We will explore and learn through hands-on, interactive activities to answer questions such as, “Where does oil come from?” “How do we find it?” “How much energy and what products come from oil?”

Teens can get creative with this month’s CreativiTeens: You Can Paint class on Monday at 4 p.m. Join us on Thursday at 1 p.m. for our final event, Sweet Summer Science. We will be performing tasty experiments from Solar Oven S’mores to Fizzy Lemonade to Ice Cream in a bag. Our last Teen Take & Make of the summer will be available starting Friday on a first come, first served basis, so be sure to snag one before they’re gone.

This time the kit will include everything you need to make your own Summer Friendship Bracelet. Lastly, we will be having our Library Loot Prize Auction on Saturday. The auction room will be open for prize viewing starting at noon, and the bidding will begin at 12:30 p.m. This is your chance to spend your hard-earned Library Loot on awesome prizes! Be sure to bring your Library Loot with you to the library, because you won’t be able to take any prizes home without it.

In addition to our regular weekly programs for adults, we will also be celebrating Shark Week with our Book to Reel and Silver Screen Society meetings. Monday at 6 p.m. discuss Steve Alten’s “The Meg,” which tells the story of a prehistoric monster called a megalodon terrorizing scientists and beachgoers alike. As a follow-up to the book discussion, join us on Thursday at 7 p.m to watch the movie and discuss the film and its differences from the book. Also on Thursday evening, come make our Adult Craft, Felt Succulent Gardens, at 6 p.m.
