Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! We have partnered with the USD 428 School District Reading Initiative to bring families special Charlotte’s Web events this weekend. Friday evening at 6:30 p.m., enjoy a free movie, popcorn, and treats with us. Help us bring the classic animated movie to life with props and have fun interacting with the movie in a whole new way! Then join us Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for a morning movie as we watch the live-action adaptation of Charlotte’s Web. Both films will offer a great chance for families to discuss the similarities and the differences between the movie and the book.

Monday we have our next Book Buddies meeting. Children will have the opportunity to play games, eat snacks, and be partnered up with a buddy to read aloud. Having regular opportunities to practice familiar reading with one-on-one assistance is a great way for kids to gain confidence in reading and hearing stories. Reading aloud helps with reading fluency, phrasing, and expression. Plus, having an older kid showing them how amazing and cool reading can be is a great motivator for kids to get into reading and enjoy it as a pastime. You can join us for Book Buddies every Monday in February at 6 p.m.

Also happening Monday is our Teen Café. From 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., teens can enjoy a cup of coffee and play some festive games for the chance to get their hands on some Valentine’s treats. The next day at 4 p.m., teens can join Miss Haylee and Miss Shanna for Teen Tuesday. Hang out and have fun with other teens doing crafts, games, and more! We do ask that teens RSVP for this event, which can be done by using the code @gbteentues in the Remind app, on remind.com, or via text to 81010 (standard message rates apply). This way we can be sure to have enough supplies for everyone who wants to come.

Later at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, our Open Book Club is meeting to discuss The 7 1/2  Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. It’s not too late to pick up a copy at the front desk or check it out digitally on Hoopa and Libby to read before we meet!

This coming Friday, Feb. 18, we have two exciting events for children grades 3-5. First at 10:30 a.m. we have a Finger Nail and Lip Gloss Spa Session. Kiddos can join us for a morning of pampering as we learn how to care for our hands and nails. During our spa treatment, we will do a hand mask, soak, and massage. After that, we will learn different ways to decorate our nails and make our own lip gloss to take home. In the afternoon starting at 2 p.m., put on your creative thinking caps and hard hats for Engineer IT! Using engineering kits and miscellaneous building materials, come plan and build playgrounds, treehouses, roller coasters, and state park attractions. Registration for both events is required, so be sure to get signed up before the spots are gone. You can register for both of these events on our website, greatbendpl.info, under the “Children’s Activities” page.
