Threepeat and four out of five. That’s what Wayne DeWerff accomplished at the Kansas State Fair this past week.
DeWerff won the Governor’s Sweepstakes for the third year in a row and the Champion watermelon for the fourth of five years.
With Governor Kelly in Korea, Lt. Governor David Toland represented the office by enjoying Governor’s Day at the fair and accepted the traditional gift from DeWerff for the second year in a row. Accolades continued for DeWerff as he won three of four potato classes and also first with a collection of three varieties of potatoes. Two other “collections of” continued with first for the group of three watermelons and collection of three onion varieties. He won all but two of the individual watermelon classes whereas he was second in them. Continuing the blues, DeWerff had firsts of okra, beans, eggplant, and largest cabbage and second with jalapeno peppers, Roma and cherry tomatoes, and largest potato, while finishing third in the largest watermelon. Always looking for oddities while growing, DeWerff laughed to himself when he also won the oddities class with a double okra pod.
DeWerff added that another Barton County farmer, Fawnia Miller, received a plaque and congratulations at the awards presentation for the Champion alfalfa sample.
