Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! This week we have tons of exciting events so let’s just jump into it.

Starting off with Children’s activities, Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. we have Early Literacy Story Time where kids can not only hear a story but get up and dance, hear silly songs, and participate in fun learning games! Later that day at 3:30, Miss Shannah Long from the Center for Counseling will be here to teach us how to focus on you by utilizing games, crafts, and more in relaxing and calming ways that will help with mindfulness and self-regulation. Then Wednesday at 4 p.m. we have the first meeting for two new book clubs for kids. First for ages 5-9 is the Tree House Travelers Magic Tree House Book Club, where you will pick up your first book, “Dinosaurs Before Dark.” Then we have another club for our 9-12 crowd, Follow the Clues Book Club, where you will pick up “Belly Up” for your first book. At both book club meetings, you will get the chance to learn how the book club will work as well as play games and make a craft. Be sure to read your book, then come to the October 19th meeting to discuss and pick up the next book as well as participate in fun activities. Lastly, on Saturday the 24th we have a very special Story Time planned. Kiddos can bring their grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, or a special friend with them to our Grandparent Story Time. Together enjoy stories, music, and crafts plus eat some tasty treats!

For teens, we are starting off the week with a Banned Book Bash on Monday at 4 p.m. Together we will celebrate our freedom to choose what we read. Teens can sample different banned and challenged books at our tasting tables and learn about why some titles get banned. Then they can create a button for their favorite banned book, and get their picture taken reading a banned book! And of course, a Banned Book Bash wouldn’t be complete without snacks! Thursday will be our next teen activity, Builders, Assemble! at 4 p.m. Test your teamwork skills as you and your teammates attempt to create the most elaborate chain reactions and go head-to-head in other challenges. Will your team be the fastest kinetic domino stackers? Join us for these hands-on challenges and more to find out.

For adults, Tuesday is our next Open Book Club meeting, this month we are discussing “The Dictionary of Lost Words,” by Pip Williams. Young Esme grew up surrounded by words with her father in Oxford, where he and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme grows up feeling unseen and unheard under her father’s sorting table. Until one day one of the words floats down to her on a slip of paper. She rescues the word and then begins collecting more words, rescuing and collecting words that show women in a positive light. Copies of this book can still be picked up at the front desk.
