Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! As promised, we have another busy day today, July 14. Starting things off, Luna, our fabulous pet partner dog, will be here from 10:30 a.m. to noon. At 3 p.m. we have our next Tween Scene, where we will be making Stained Glass Lanterns.

Teens can join us for VolunTeens at 3:30 p.m. Possibly against our better judgment, we will be giving teens the reins to make TikToks for our library account to help promote library events and materials. At 4 p.m., we have our usual Crochet Club. Then, at 6 p.m., join us for our latest Adult Craft Night. This time we will be making DIY Flower Squishies.

Then, if that wasn’t enough fun to pack into one Thursday, we have Lakeside Trivia at 7 p.m. at the aptly named Dry Lake Brewing! Do you know what the deepest lake in the world is? How about who the star player of the Lakers is? If it’s got “lake” in the name, or if it’s just related to lakes, get ready to test your knowledge of it. Preregistration is still open now on our website.

On Friday night, July 14, the fun continues with our next Casual Game Friday. This will be our last one of the summer, sadly, but we are going out with a bang! Get ready to dance your heart out to popular songs during our Just Dance party.

On Monday, July 17, our special guest, Robert Kaplafka will be here to teach us about how guitars make those wonderful sounds. From the earliest guitars to today’s screaming electric monsters, this illustrated lecture explains in simple terms how these works of art create art. The program will also cover the creation of one of the world’s strangest custom guitars. If you’re a music buff, a guitar aficionado, or maybe just a fan of learning the inner workings of the things around you, this is sure to be a presentation you won’t want to miss. This presentation will be made live at the Great Bend Public Library via Zoom for those wishing to attend but unable to make it to the library for any reason. The Zoom link will be available upon request.

Weekly Story Times are back Tuesday with Baby Bounce Story Time at 9:30 a.m., followed by Friendship Circle Story Time and Kindness Kids Book Club concurrently at 10:30 a.m. Also happening on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., we have Tabletop Teens, where we will enjoy group gaming sessions. Enjoy an afternoon of tabletop games. If you made your own in June, we encourage you to bring it for everyone to try!

Then, that evening, July 18, at 7 p.m., is our next Open Book Club. We will be discussing “The Woman in the Library,” by Sulari Gentill. Copies are still available for pickup at the front desk, if you would like to join in on the discussion.

On Wednesday, July 19, we have a very special event planned. Starting at 10:30 a.m., in lieu of our planned Family Tie Dye outdoor event, we are bringing the color inside! Come dressed as your favorite Mario character to have a fun-filled day of Mario with a splash of color. We will be watching the brand new video game movie while we enjoy some tie-dye popcorn and colorful juice drinks. We might even have some other colorful and Mario-themed fun planned for the day. You’ll have to join us to find out!

Lastly, next Thursday the 20th, among our regular events like Luna, Tween Scene and Crochet Club, we have two other events. Starting with Teen Manga and Anime Club at 3:30 p.m., where we will be watching the anime movie “Your Name.” The movie follows two teenagers who suddenly swap bodies. But when the boy and girl decide to meet in person, things become even more complicated as a mystery begins to unfold. Teens entering 6th grade through those who graduated 12th this year are welcome to join us for the movie and some free popcorn.

At 6 p.m., Darren Ivey will be here as part of our Third Thursday Speaker Program to present “Great Library Capers: Libraries, Archives, and Those Who Steal from Them.” Darren L. Ivey is an author and historian. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in History from Kansas State University, and a Master of Library Science degree from Emporia State University. He is currently the Director of Library and College Archives at Barton Community College in Great Bend as well as the collections manager of the Cohen Center for Kansas History.
