Library switches to spooky mode for October
Book Nook.jpg

Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! We have another upcoming week full of exciting events, but first, we wanted to remind you that Saturday, Oct. 8, is the last day to register online for the October 2022 TeenBookCrate. Teens who do so will receive a themed box with a mystery book, activities, and lots of goodies. Monday we have our Teen Café from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Come enjoy coffee or hot chocolate while making some creepy crafts. Thursday is our October Teen Manga and Anime Club meeting. We will be discussing the webtoon Noblesse as well as watching an episode of the anime. Noblesse follows a vampire who awakens from a century-long slumber and disguises himself as a high school student to learn how to navigate the modern world. If you would like to read Noblesse before the meeting to participate in the discussion, you can find it on the Webtoon app or on webtoons.com. We recommend reading through Chapter 22 to be ready for the meeting.

Children’s events next week start with our regular Tuesday Story Time at 10:30 a.m. On Thursday, Luna will be here from 3:30-5 p.m. for her own story time, led by children who would like to come and read to her. She will be on hiatus after this coming week, so be sure to visit her while you can.

We have a couple of concurrent events at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. For children K-2, we are offering For the Birds, in which we will create feeders for backyard birds who will be around this winter and learn how to identify them. Find the registration for this event on our website. Our other Friday activity, Mystery Detectives, is aimed at kids in grades 3-5. We need your help to solve a crime that’s been committed at the library and to find the culprit responsible!

Join us on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 10:30 a.m. for Monsters, Mummies, and Muffins Family Story Time. Listen to Halloween stories, dance to the “Monster Mash,” and make mummies while enjoying a tasty muffin.

Next week adults are invited to join us on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. for this month’s Adult Craft Night. This time we are turning wood slices into works of art! You can choose to paint yours or use photo transfer techniques to make a one-of-a-kind gift or souvenir. As this is an after-hours event, we ask all attendees to please be in the library by 6 p.m. before we lock our doors.

Last but not least, on Friday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m. we have prepared an evening of Campfire Stories to Tell in the Dark for tweens, teens, and adults alike (grade 4 and older). Gather ‘round and bring your tales of terror to share as we roast s’mores around the “campfire!” This event is sure to be spooky fun for all. Who knows, our resident library ghost might even want to join in! Anyone interested in this event needs to register on our website by Wednesday, October 12, so that we can be sure to have enough treats for everyone on the day of the event. Since this is an after-hours event, we will have our east doors open between 5:45 and 6 p.m. to allow entrance for our guests. After that, they will be locked for the night.
