Monday marks the 150th Anniversary of Memorial Day 1866-2016. Since my first display at the library was a tribute to World War II, Red Meier knew that this day is important to me. He brought me a VFW magazine with an article that he wanted me to read. Commander-in-Chief, John A. Biedzrycki Jr. gave a little background, as well as some personal opinions, “Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day from the custom of decorating graves with flowers, started simultaneously in both North and South after the Civil War in 1866.” “...Memorial Day evolved by the turn of the 19th century to include the dead of all wars. And not just those of the big-name wars, but of every overseas campaign. Each passing year, the significance of Memorial Day fades in the public mind. While the memory of loved ones killed in war never subsides in the lives of family members and close friends, the day was intended for all Americans to share, at least symbolically, in a collective form of grief. Sadly, this has long since been the case.”
Growing up in Norton, my parents taught me the importance of this special holiday from a very young age. I was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and sold poppies every year in my youth. It wasn’t until I was a little older that I truly understood the significance, when I learned that my Uncle Mike Campbell was killed in World War II. He is buried at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, and my daughter will be attending college there this summer, so I will be visiting his grave. When I married Toby, I found out this day is important to his family as well. They, now we, gather together every year at the Geneseo Cemetery to attend Memorial Day services. I encourage you to find a service in your area to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Ellinwood School Community Library will be closed Saturday-Monday for Memorial Day. Hope you all have a safe and enjoyable weekend!
