ATLANTA Production has officially begun on the sequel to 2014s wildly successful blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, and a few new faces are involved.

According to the Facebook page of the franchises writer/director James Gunn, principal photography began Wednesday on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in Atlanta and one of Gunns favorite actors is along for the ride.

My favorite movie as a small child was The Strongest Man in the World, Gunn wrote on Facebook. So Im glad to announce that, yes, Kurt Russell has joined our cast and, yes, he is a more awesome a dude than I ever could have imagined.

The main gang is all returning for the follow-up film as well, including Chris Pratt returning as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as the deliciously green Gamora, in addition to the voices of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper bringing to life the sidekick characters of Groot and Rocket, respectively.

It has not yet been announced who Russell will be playing, but according to the information released on Marvel.com, the second movie will unravel the mystery of Peter Quills true parentage.

Other new cast members include Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki and Chris Sullivan.

Guardians of the Galaxy earned over $770 million at the box office worldwide, making it the most successful installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it premiered in the summer of 2014. The soundtrack, Awesome Mixtape Vol. 1 went platinum and is also getting the sequel treatment.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently slated to premiere on May 5, 2017, the same season as the reboot of Spider-Man (July 7, 2017) and Thor: Ragnarok (Nov. 3, 2017). Marvels next major releases include Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016, and Doctor Strange on Nov. 4, 2016.
