Greetings from the Great Bend Public Library! Are you ready for the Fourth? Got the fireworks, the drinks, the cooler filled with ice and popsicles? Planning on barbecuing this year? Well, the Great Bend Public Library has something to help with your Fourth of July planning this year. Starting Monday, June 27, through Saturday, July 2, we will be offering free barbecue dry rub to our patrons, and the best part is you get to make it yourself! Come to the library to concoct your own dry rub using one of our recipes or freestyle your own creation with the provided spices. Come make your dry rub while supplies last.

Next week we have our regular 10:30 a.m. children’s events, starting with Reading to Luna on Monday, followed by Story Times on Tuesday and the next session of our We Grow Corn Series on Thursday.

Wednesday, we have an extra special event for all ages. The Sternberg Museum will be here to teach us about the Western Interior Seaway and the critters that lived in it long, long ago. Did you know that Kansas used to be an ocean? Come learn about the ancient ocean beneath our feet and what Kansas can teach us about ancient marine ecosystems, at 10:30 a.m. this coming Wednesday, June 29.

For teens, this week we have our CreativiTeens event on Monday at 4 p.m. This time we will be making Tie Dye Pillowcases. Teens will get the chance to make their own tie-dye creations to take home. Then Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. will be our next Adult & Teen Create, where we will be making Paper Shadow Boxes.

Friday, July 1, is game day! Casual Game Friday that is, join us in the teen spot for a friendly and cooperative game of Overcooked 2. Dash around the kitchen as you and your teammate race to fill increasingly complicated orders. And last but not least, don’t forget our Titanic-themed Choose-Your-Own Scavenger Hunt, which is a passive activity available at the library from now until July 16. Try your luck as a passenger or crew member and follow the clues to see if you will sink or swim.

We have several events for adults next week starting with Book to Reel on Monday at 6 p.m.

Book to Reel is a special summer program that we are having in conjunction with the Silver Screen Society Film Club. During Monday’s meeting we will be discussing the book “Life of Pi,” then Thursday we will have the film club meeting at 7 p.m., where we will watch the movie and discuss it. After we are done discussing the film we will discuss the differences between the book and the movie. You don’t have to have read the book to come to the film club meeting as we will discuss the book and film differences after the general film discussion. Copies of “Life of Pi” are available at the front desk and on hoopla and Libby, to anyone wishing to read the book before the Monday meeting.

Tuesday evening the library is the place to be if you’re looking for a laugh. At 5:30 p.m. anyone 18 and up is welcome to join us for an evening of hilarity as we play Crabs Adjust Humidity an expansion of the game Cards Against Humanity. Be prepared to leave with acing sides as everyone tries to outdo each other for the biggest laugh with their hands of cards.

Join us next Friday for our next adult movie as we go on another harrowing adventure under the sea. Disaster strikes when a drilling station more than six miles below the ocean surface is compromised. The survivor’s only hope is to walk along the ocean floor to another drilling facility, but things get even more dangerous when the crew begins to be attacked by a mysterious and deadly creature. The movie starts at 7 doors will close at 7:15 p.m.
