Volunteers in Action/RSVP wants to thank everyone that purchased recycled Memorial Flowers from our Great Bend and Hoisington locations this year. Because of your support, we made over $1,500 which means that we will be able to say a proper “THANK YOU” to our volunteers for everything they do to make our communities a better place to live. If the winds and rain don’t beat them up too much before next Monday, we have volunteers scheduled to help us pick up the abandoned flowers at the cemetery again this year. Don’t forget: if you want to pick up your flowers to use again next year, be sure to pick them up before 8 a.m. on Monday, June 3. If they’re still there after 8 a.m., you’ll probably see them here next spring.
Our Medical Transportation Program needs a few special people who like to drive. You will use your personal vehicle to transport individuals to necessary medical appointment and would have full discretion to make local trips only, short trips, or longer distance trips. RSVP reimburses you for the cost of fuel. We also have a wheelchair-accessible van available for people who can’t travel any other way. It is a regular club van so no special license is required. Since the van is part of the college fleet, drivers must be willing to undergo a driving record check to be approved to drive the van. It varies, of course, but we might utilize the van once or twice a month. Currently, we only have two drivers approved to drive the van so we definitely need more. If you or someone you know might be interested, please give Donna a call at 792-1614. It’s a very worthwhile and simple volunteer opportunity for someone like likes to drive.
The Meals on Wheels Board of Directors has an opening for a resident of Great Bend. Meals on Wheels of Barton County provides home-delivered meals to over 70 homebound residents of Great Bend, Ellinwood, and Hoisington. The Board of Directors meets quarterly at the RSVP office, 1025 Main, in Great Bend for approximately one hour. If you are interested or know someone who might be interested, please call Donna at 792-1614.
Meals on Wheels is also looking for additional substitute drivers in Great Bend for this summer. One of our regular routes is delivered daily by the vocational Workshop at Great Bend High School. In past years, we have had another source of volunteers that filled in that route during the summer when the schools are out but that source is not available this year. The meals are picked up at the Great Bend Senior Center between 11:00 –11:30; the whole process from pickup through delivery normally takes less than one hour. If you are willing to volunteer one hour per week this summer delivering meals, call Donna at 792-1614. I’d love to talk to you about it.
Volunteers in Action and the Kansas Volunteer Commission will be co-hosting a very special non-profit leadership training this summer. More information will be available soon but all non-profits and anyone that works with volunteers will be invited to attend.
Be sure to enjoy some of the June Jaunt activities this weekend in Great Bend and Ellinwood. Volunteer in Action volunteers will be there assisting with games in Jack Kilby square and working with other non-profits to make this weekend a big success for our communities.
