Habitat for Humanity seeks weekend volunteers

Habitat for Humanity of Barton County has resumed construction on its latest building project at 1906 Hubbard. Volunteers are needed every Saturday until the project is finished, said Rachel Mawhirter.

The three bedroom, two bathroom house will soon become a home for the Wilkerson family of Great Bend. Daryl and Amber Wilkerson have four children, and are helping with the construction project by putting sweat equity hours during each volunteer weekend. This Saturday, volunteers are needed to come help the Wilkersons hang Sheetrock. Feb. 25 will be spent drywalling and hanging siding.

Once the project is finished, the Wilkersons will be purchasing the home from Habitat for Humanity with no labor costs or interest included on the mortgage. Once payments start coming back in, Habitat can then use those funds to help build another house for another family in need, Mawhirter said.

Construction is scheduled to wrap up sometime later this spring, and volunteers will be needed every Saturday until it’s finished. In addition to manual labor, volunteers are also needed to make lunches for the rest of the crew members. For more information send e-mail to habitatbartoncounty@hotmail.com.
