Controlled burns blow out of control

Blowing embers caused two controlled fires in burn pits to spread on Tuesday, requiring assistance from the Great Bend Fire Department, Chief Mike Napolitano reported.
At 10:25 a.m., firefighters responded to Barton Community College, 245 NE 30 Road, where an ember from a burn pit escaped and started a small grass fire.
At 12:36 a.m. Wednesday, firefighters were dispatched to Mid America Feeders, 251 NW 10 Ave. They found two separate fires, about 20 yards apart, close to a burn pit. One was a pile of smoldering corn and the other was a pile of tree limbs and wooden fence posts. The fire was knocked down and the occupant was on scene to help push some of the fire in the burn pit with a high loader.
