BCC announces endowed scholarship recipients

Barton Community College has announced recipients of 2010-11 endowed scholarships based on academic excellence. These scholarships are awarded by the Barton Community College Foundation.

The following students, listed by high school, are recipients of these endowed scholarships. (Additional scholarship excellence award recipients from area high schools will be published in a later release.)

Ellinwood High School

Ryan Komarek, a 2010 graduate of Ellinwood High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in agriculture. He is a recipient of the Amos E. Bayer Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, he was active in FFA, football and basketball. He earned membership in the National Honor Society. He is the son of Chris and Jamie Komarek, Ellinwood.

Katie Morgenstern, a 2010 graduate of EHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in business. She is a recipient of the George Cusick Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in tennis and basketball. She was named to the All-A Honor Roll and was selected to attend the University of Kansas Honor Banquet. She was on the 3-2-1A state runner-up tennis team and 3-2-1A regional championship tennis team. She is the daughter of Kim and Todd Morgenstern, Ellinwood.

Jessica Muller, a 2010 graduate of EHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in nursing. She is a recipient of the Karen Jensen Ireland Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in cheerleading three years, Kansas Association for Youth two years, yearbook two years, newspaper one year, DFYIT three years and Upward Bound four years. She was named to the Honor Roll all four years and received the Pride Card four years. At Cheer Camp, she earned the Leadership Award and Best Jump Award. She is the daughter of David and Kala Muller, Ellinwood.

Haley Petz, a 2010 graduate of EHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in nursing. She is a recipient of the Gus and Ethel Gagelman Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in yearbook, softball, dance line and Kansas Association for Youth. She received honors in yearbook, KAY and ceramics. She is the daughter of Marvin and Susie Petz, Ellinwood.

Great Bend High School

Stephanie Banda, a 2010 graduate of Great Bend High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in elementary education. She is a recipient of the Kirkman Endowment for Academic Studies as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in Drama Club, Kayettes, Future Educators of America as social chair, Upward Bound, Pep Club, Spanish Club, track and soccer. She was named to the honor roll all four years. She is the daughter of Diana Chavez, Great Bend.

Devan Boeger, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in secondary math education. She is a recipient of the Kirkman Endowment for Academic Studies as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, Future Educators of America as president, Student Council as president, Kayettes and Freshman Mentoring Program. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and was named to the All-A Honor Roll. She also was named to the Hays City Shootout All-Academic Team in 2009 and the All-Conference First Team for 2008-09. She is the daughter of Chris and Kathy Boeger, Great Bend.

Rebecca Davidson, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore at Barton. She is a recipient of the Kirkman Endowment for Academic Studies as an excellence award. At Barton, she is a member of the women’s tennis team and has earned a 4.0 GPA. She is the daughter of Greg and Marla Davidson, Great Bend.

Benjamin Gregg, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in athletic training. He is a recipient of the Louis S. and Mary L. Kinzel Family Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, he was active in football, swimming, baseball, A Cappella Choir, Madrigal Pops Singers, varsity band and jazz band. He was named to the honor roll all four years and he earned a senior letter in football and swimming. He is the son of Shannon and Julie Gregg, Great Bend.

Karli Henning, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in education. She is a recipient of the Clifford and Pauline Getz Scholarship as an excellence award. She is a member of Barton’s dance line. She is the daughter of Dale and Joan Henning, Great Bend.

Jeffrey Hipp, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton. He is a recipient of the Cox Communications Technology Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, he was active in Vocational Technology Club and bowling. He earned membership in the National Honor Society and graduated in the top 10 percent of his class. He received a varsity letter for three years in bowling and took eighth place at the state bowling tournament in 2010. He is the son of Paul and Becky Hipp, Great Bend.

Sarah Jones, a 2008 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in graphic design. She is a recipient of the J.A. Mermis Jr. Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in German Club, Art Club and A Cappella Choir. At Barton, she is involved in Technical Arts Club and she has earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa. She is the daughter of Donald and Brenda Jones, Great Bend.

Morgan King, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in social work. She is a recipient of the Al Yost Honorarium Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in dance line and Kayettes. She was named to the honor roll and earned an athletic letter in dance line. She is the daughter of Greg and Shannon King, Great Bend.

Cassandra Niedens, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in medical coding and medical administration technology. He is a recipient of the Verna S. Davis Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in Kayettes, Pep Club and Just Dance Performance Company. She was named to the honor roll every nine weeks all four years of high school. She is the daughter of Mike and Debbie Niedens, Great Bend.

Kylie Sinclair, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman general studies major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Leila Hamilton Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in Future Educators of America of America as a board member, cheerleading for varsity football and Argonne Dance Line. She is the daughter of Darrin and Terri Sinclair, Great Bend.

Joann Stacey, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore music major at Barton. She is a recipient of the George and Cleo Tregellas Music Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in choir, band and Kayettes. At Barton, she is a member of Hilltop Singers and has earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa. She is the daughter of Eric and Kathleen Stacey, Great Bend.

Julie Stoss, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in agriculture/business. She is a recipient of the Fred and Renee Schmitt Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in tennis, Kayettes, A Cappella Choir and Freshman Mentor Program. She earned membership in the National Honor Society. She was named to the All "A" Honor Roll all four years of high school and placed in the exemplary category on the 2008-09 Reading and Writing Assessment Test. She was named All-Conference in tennis. She is the daughter of Dale and Glenda Stoss, Olmitz.

David Tomlin, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman computer science major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Kirkman Endowment for Academic Studies as an excellence award. In high school, he was active in Future Business Leaders of America, German Club, cross country, wrestling and track. He earned an academic letter and membership in the National Honor Society. He was named a Kansas Honor Scholar and earned varsity track and cross country letters. He is the son of Mark and Shirley Tomlin, Great Bend.

Erin Weathers, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman communications major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Kirkman Endowment for Academic Studies as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in A Cappella Choir and Kayettes. She is the daughter of Terry and Sara Weathers, Great Bend.

Patrick Cowan, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman accounting major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Chrissie Roe Evans and Dick B. Evans Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, he was active in tennis, basketball, debate and forensics. He was named to the Principal’s Honor Roll. He is the son of Molly Thurman, Great Bend.

Hoisington High School

Nolan Esfeld, a 2010 graduate Hoisington High School, is a freshman business major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Nell Lyons Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, he was active in cross country, basketball, track and Book Club as treasurer. He earned membership in the National Honor Society. He is the son of Curt and Sandy Davis, Hoisington.

Kacey Demel, a 2008 graduate of HHS, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in nursing. She is a recipient of the Clara Barton Nursing Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in cheerleading, dance line, debate, forensics, tennis and volleyball. She also was named to the honor roll. In tennis, she placed 10th in singles and sixth in doubles. At Barton, she earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa and was named to the Dean’s List. She is the daughter of Francis and Becky Demel, Hoisington.

Karisa Kaiser, a 2010 graduate of HHS, is a freshman elementary education major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Al Yost Honorarium Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in tennis, cheerleading, dance line, Student Council, forensics, debate, Scholars Bowl, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and Drama Club. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and National Society of High School Scholars. She also was named to "Who’s Who Among American High School Students" and received the HHS Cardinal Award. She was named a Kansas Board of Regents Scholar and a Hugh O’Brien Youth Ambassador and also was selected to attend Sunflower Girls State. She is the daughter of Mike and Danah Kaiser, Hoisington.

Sarah Kaiser, a 2010 graduate of HHS, is a freshman at Barton. She is a recipient of the George and Ruth Murdy Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in track, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and Cardinal Crew. She was named to the honor roll and earned membership in the National Honor Society. She was name a Kansas Honor Scholar and was an HHS Senior Honor recipient. She is the daughter of Randy and Michelle Kaiser, Hoisington.

Rebecca Maier, a 2010 graduate of HHS, is a freshman business major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Boys Insurance Business Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, track, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Cardinal Crew, cheerleading and power lifting. She was named to the honor roll and she earned membership in the National Honor Society. In addition, she was named a Kansas Honor Scholar, and was honored at the HHS Senior Honors Banquet. She is the daughter of Pam and Kevin Hickel, Hoisington.

Kaylee Miller, a 2009 graduate of HHS, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in business. She is a recipient of the Harold Hudnall Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in Science Club, Cardinal Crew, women’s golf, basketball and track. She served as vice president and secretary of her class. She was named to the Principal’s Honor Roll and National Honor Roll. At Barton, she has earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa and was named to the Dean’s Honor Roll. She also is a member of the women’s golf team. She is the daughter of Troy and Carrie Miller, Great Bend.

Dakota Smith, a 2010 graduate of HHS, is a freshman majoring in journalism at Barton. He is a recipient of the Clifford and Pauling Getz Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, he was active in baseball, band, choir, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. He also served as football manager. He was named to the honor roll all four years. He is the son of Chris and Stephanie Smith, Hoisington.

Jayci Wyant, a 2010 graduate of HHS, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in nursing. She is a recipient of the Danny and Darlene Biggs Nursing Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in debate, forensics, Book Club as president and Drama Club. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and served as secretary. She was valedictorian of her graduating class and was named a University of Kansas Honor Student. She is the daughter of Ronald Wyant and Linda Shores, Hoisington.
