Trina Delgado, principal at St. Mary and St. Dominic schools in Garden City, has been appointed Superintendent of Schools for the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City by Bishop John B. Brungardt effective July 1. She succeeds Randy Steinle, who served as the interim Superintendent.
Delgado will continue her position as principal of St. Dominic School, while St. Mary lead teacher Michelle Mead will take over as principal at St. Mary School.
“The most important thing for me right now is to learn as much as I can about the superintendent’s role,” Delgado said. “Bishop (John B.) Brungardt is a very pro-school bishop. I’ll learn from him as well as from the Wichita Diocese. What they’re doing is obviously working. They have the growth of many new Catholic schools, and it only makes sense to learn from the success in all areas that they are having.
“The most difficult thing for me in making this decision, although I’m extremely excited about the challenge of the new position, was knowing that I would have to give up principalship at one of my two schools.  I will miss the daily interaction with the St. Mary students, families and staff.  I take comfort in the fact that I will continue to be a part of St. Mary, simply serving them in a different role.”
St. Mary School received the Building-Wide Standard of Excellence in 2009, 2010, and 2011. St. Dominic School has received the honor every year since 2007. In 2007, St. Dominic School was awarded the Governor’s Achievement Award after their state assessments ranked in the top five percent of the state of Kansas.
“We have strong Catholic leaders and teachers in all of our Catholic schools,” Delgado said. “I see my role as being the face of the Catholic schools and of Catholic education as a whole -- of promoting and supporting Catholic education in our diocese and maintaining the wonderful things we currently have happening.
“Our seven schools have a strong history of tradition along with success in Catholic education.  I hope to bring a vision for growth for our diocese as well. Children attending a Catholic school are immersed in Catholic education for seven and a half hours every day.  It strengthens and compliments what they are taught at home.  Combined with rigorous academics, it’s a natural fit for what an education is meant to be.”
Delgado and her husband, Dan, moved to Garden City from Nebraska in 1993. Both were hired to teach at Victor Ornelas Elementary School. Delgado was working toward her Master’s Degree in elementary education at this time. Within three years of her arrival she was hired as principal of St. Mary School, and in 1998 began serving as principal of both St. Mary and St. Dominic schools. Her husband serves as head cross country and track coach at Garden City Community College. The couple has four children.
In addition to the schools in Garden City, the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City includes: Sacred Heart Cathedral School, Dodge City; St. Joseph, Ellinwood; Holy Family, Great Bend; Sacred Heart, Pratt; and Sacred Heart, Ness City.
