The filing deadline for the 2020 Election is noon Monday, June 1, Barton County Election officer Donna Zimmerman said. On ballots will be Barton County elected officials, city council members, Ellinwood Hospital District trustees, Cottonwood Extension District Number 17, township trustees and township treasurers and precinct committeemen/precinct committeewomen.
The primary election is set for Aug. 4 and the general election for Nov. 3.
The following positions will appear on the ballot:
• County commissioner – District 2
• County commissioner – District 3
• County commissioner – District 4 (Unexpired Term)
• County attorney
• County clerk
• County register of deeds
• County sheriff
• County treasurer
• City of Great Bend – one council member from each ward
• City of Hoisington – one council member from each ward
• City of Ellinwood – three council member positions at-large
• Ellinwood Hospital District - two Board of Trustees positions at-large
• All Townships – township trustee positions
• All Townships – township treasurer positions
• Precinct committeemen/committeewomen – one per precinct
All candidates listed here file with the Barton County Clerk’s Office at the courthouse, 1400 Main Street, room 202, in Great Bend. The courthouse is closed, so those wanting to file need to call the office at 620-793-1835, and a staff member will meet them at the door with the paperwork.
Filing forms may also be picked-up at the Barton County Annex Building drive-through at 2223 Broadway in Great Bend.
Completed forms can be delivered to the courthouse (follow the same call-in procedure) or mailed.
Filing fees are:
• County elected positions filing fee - call for fee
• City/hospital/extension positions filing fee - $20
• Township clerk filing fee - $1
• There is no filing fee for precinct committee people positions
Any registered voter residing in the above named districts may file for election on or before the filing deadline.

In addition to the county elections, there are several state and national races this fall as well. The filing deadline is noon Monday, June 1, with applications handled through the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office, not at the county level.
The primary election is set for Aug. 4 and the general election for Nov. 3. The following federal and state offices are up for election:
National level
• U.S. president/vice president
• One U.S. senator (the seat vacated by the retirement of Pat Roberts)
• Four U.S. representatives (including the First District, which includes Barton County, and the is the seat currently held by Roger Marshall who has filed for the Senate opening)
Kansas level
• 40 state senators (this includes the 33rd District, a seat now held by Mary Jo Taylor of Stafford)
• 125 state representatives (this includes the 109th District held by Troy Waymaster, 112th District held by Tory Arnberger and 113th District held by Alicia Straub.
• State Board of Education (districts 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10)
Kansas courts
• Two Supreme Court justices (positions 4 and 6)
• Seven Court of Appeals Judges (Positions 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 14)
• District court judges (41 retained and 46 elected, including 20th Judicial District Division 2 held by Steven J. Johnson and Division 3 held by Mike Keeley)
• District magistrate judges (15 retained and 36 elected)
• Six district attorneys (Douglas, Johnson, Reno, Sedgwick, Saline and Wyandotte counties)
According to Kansas Secretary of State’s Office, for U.S. Senate and House, the filing fee is $1,740. For state senate candidates, the fee is $75. For state representative candidates, the fee is $50. For the State Board of Education, the fee is $25.
Filing fees for judges range from $20 to $1,287, depending the judicial level and on whether they are being elected or retained.
The declaration and accompanying filing fee for federal and state-level offices (including state legislative seats) must be submitted to the Kansas Secretary of State by the deadline.
In addition to the statutory filing fee, a candidate for federal and state offices must pay a $20 or $70 administrative fee to the Kansas Secretary of State, the Governmental Ethics Commission/Secretary of State (GEC/SOS) fee. The amount depends on the position and whether they are federal or state positions.
To file by petition for offices elected on a statewide basis, signatures must equal at least 1% of the state’s current voter registration total of the party whose nomination the candidate is seeking. For offices elected by district, signatures must equal at least 2% of the district’s current voter registration total of the party whose nomination the candidate is seeking.
Nomination petitions for federal and state-level offices (including state legislative seats) must be submitted to the Kansas Secretary of State by noon on June 1.
Petitioning candidates will avoid the filing fee, but still have to pay the GEC/SOS and registration fees.
