Alicia Straub, Barton County Commissioner from Ellinwood, and daughter Aliza were at the Barton County Fair Thursday morning entering Aliza’s fairy garden in the Horticulture exhibit.
Straub spent 12 years in 4-H, and she’s carrying on that tradition with her three daughters.
“They learn so many life skills in 4-H,” she said. They enjoy taking care of animals, arts and crafts, photography, and she likes that they are learning leadership skills, something 4-H emphasizes.
This year, while the big kids were away at camp, she helped Aliza put together the garden. They shopped the dollar store for the decorative items, and picked up succulent plants at local stores. A pot from home, some growing medium, and some quality time together resulted in the whimsical display.
